I got my car back from the dealer today and was told that my Tuned ECU has a memory fault in it, which as a result is causing a hesitation, backfire, surge situation in first gear from a dead stop. The dealer wants to replace the ECU, at $1200. I politely declined.
I'm wondering if there is a way to determine what caused the memory fault, the flashed tune or just age. It's the original ECU, so its 13 years old. My understanding is that it is extremely rare for a ECU to go bad.
Thoughts?

Yup. Ran stage I software with a TME exhaust for 100K miles no problems. Within six months of upgrading the Turbo, downpipe, and reflashing the ECU to Stage III, I started having issues. The first six months were awesome. Amazing power and torque, incredible passing, total sleeper effect.
I hope they can fix it....

The dealer is hesitant to replace because my car is 10 years old and has 205K miles on it. Fortunately, my car is still running normally. It just throws bogus check engine lights and the ECU WILL NOT COMMUNICATE with the Volvo dealer's test equipment.
I've been told to drive my car until it dies, then get a new car.

Re: Memory Fault in ECU... result of aftermarket tune or age????? (V70 Brad)

I'm on the drive till it dies road right now. Having already put $$$ into the turbo, downpipe, exhaust, ECU upgrades etc it would be nice to be able to use those items until the transmission or engine blows up, then part it out and junk it.

What did the folks at IPD say?
You could try another ECU, just to see if that clears the probs,
at low rpms anyways.

But start with fresh ignition components to see if that helps improve the situation. Apparently, Stage III cars are very hard on ignition components.
If its still bad, then its definitely the ECU. Since the car ran well after the software upgrade, the software shouldn't be the issue.
I'm going to try a fresh plugs, cap, rotors and see what happens. Hopefully I can find a cheap replacement ECU on ebay...
