Hi Guys,
I am traveling with my 3 year old son from Fla. to Mass.
After some spirited driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway (but within the 45 MPH speed limit), I got a left rear door ajar warning a few times. After stopping to open and close the door several times (each time the message went out) I then got an SRS-Airbag warning followed by a Check Engine warning. I also notice a hard down shift (clunk like).
After stopping the car and restarting, only the SRS-Airbag warning remained.
Then, continuing on our way, the Check engine warning came back followed by a clunk like downshift and a total loss of all dash lights. I pulled over again and stopped the car. For good measure I pulled and reseated all fuses in the engine compartment.
The car has been sitting now for 24 hours. Today is Sunday and there will not be any dealers open. I am hoping to make it to the Roanoak W.V. area tonight.
- Any thoughts or experience on this issue(s)?
- If only the SRS-Airbag warning remains on, can I continue my trip?
Thank you for quick replies!

Sounds like its the CEM lossing power. What is the air temp? And the reason thr SRS light comes on is because it senses a loss of communication with the display in the dash. If you stop and shutdown for enough time for the unit to cool, usually about an hour or so, you will be able to continue on until it heats up again. I would use the A/c for the rest of the trip, but make sure that you let the unit cool down.

Could be a loose ground, and/or a low battery.
Has any work been done on the car recently?
I would check connections at the battery itself.

Ditto, sounds like loss of overall power.
Low / old battery
Loose ground
Dying alternator.
Dying voltage regulator.

My ground came undone once and left me and my dog stranded. Went into the shop to get a coffee and when I came out the car would not start/turn on. It sucked! I had to have it towed in. All it was the issue with the loose ground cord.

Check your trunk. Under the mat. Let us know if anything looks not good.

UPDATE: Mayday - Mayday - We're going down! - On the road traveling -Please Read/reply (wormdevil)

The car started fine and ran without any noticable issue (albeit the SRS-Airbag warning is still on) this morning and throughout the day. More time on the Blue Ridge Pkwy today and a fast run into Roanoke via 81. No issue.
No grounding issues that I could find. There was a section coming off the parkway just prior to the beginng of the problem that was VERY steep with tight turns. Perhaps the car just thought I was crashing?
The air temp was in the low 80's (but the car has been in much hotter weather living in Fla.).
I am making plans for a trip to the shop. I am sure it will not be a cheap trip for my '04 V70R.
I have to say, all in all the drive has been sublime other then this issue.
Thanks for all the advice so far and I will be intersted to hear from someone that has had a similar "dash out" issue.

Wormdevil,
Did you ever find a solution to your issue? I have a 2004 S60R that's having a similar problem... I'll be driving down the road and hear several relay clicks from behind the dash, and the instrument panel and climate control both die. Several seconds later everything comes back on as normal, but I'm left with a "rear left door open" warning. When I open and close the door, the warning goes away. So far, it only happens once and corrects itself, but it's happened a few times in the past couple weeks. I've noticed it only happens after the car has been sitting in the parking lot at work, when it's above 110° outside.
Was it just a ground, or did you need a whole new ECU?
Thanks!
Michael
