Hi. Does anyone here know the maximum distance the iPhone app can be used to remote-start an XC90? Is this a line-of-site scenario?

I'm assuming this is for the SPA xc90, not the first gen (i.e. prior to MY2016 or so). The remote start feature is not a line of sight. It is your app to your phone's internet connection to the Volvo server to your xc90's internet connection to your xc90's processor. Same with the door lock/unlock via the app.

There is an aftermarket that uses the same technology as the remote key fob, which is only for short distances.

I thought the app could use short range connection methods to remote start as well? There is no AT&T service where I live but I am able to remote start if my phone has line of sight and is within reasonable distance of the car.

It seems like an internet connection via wifi must work too. Because otherwise I wouldn't be able to remote start my car at my house.

Yes! Just inside the range of our router.

Do you not have any cell service at your home? The car might be roaming on another cell network if AT&T is not available at a given location. Your phone can be connected to the Internet via a wifi connection, but I think the car needs cell service to work.
Sometimes I can pickup a Verizon signal, but nothing strong enough for a data connection. Just SMS and maybe a phone call. My wife's cell phone is AT&T and there is nothing, for several miles around.

My 2007 XC90 was totaled last month, so we're buying a 2018 XC90 T6 Inscription this weekend. That being said, I'm a longtime Volvo driver, yet I have zero experience with "the app" that people on this thread refer to. I've searched the Apple Store from my iPhone, and I see many apps. But which is the one that connects to these modern cars?

It's called Volvo Cars. The app developer/publisher that is listed should be Volvo as well.
