Did you guys see this?! I didn't watch this morning and then heard from a friend so I hoped online to get the details...very scary. I'm surprised he kept the presence of mind to hit the brakes at all!

Re: Massa injured in Hungarian GP Quali (thesternowl)

Yeah I did, scary.
You can't avoid a bouncing and flying spring at 120 mph+!
He went straight into the tire wall but that is not what did any injuries.
Why a spring just came off Barrichello's car in the 1st place is an entire different matter!
I like the little guy, I hope he will be OK

Re: (JRL)

That was freaking scary. Still haven't watched the race, so no spoilers, but watched quali last night (friends over all weekend).
Frack, the odds of that thing coming off the car and hitting him right in the head are about 1,000,000:1 and still. I can't imagine getting hit by a 10 lb spring in the head doing over 100 MPH.
Updates are that he has a cracked skull and has undergone surgery to relieve swelling. CT scan as of yesterday reveals all fine, so far.

Re: (GrecianVolvo)

I guess Massa is conscious again. Apparently there is undetermined damage to his optic nerve. Damn...
edit: I guess Massa's family doctor is now saying that Massa's eye is not damaged; hopefully this is true.

Re: (thesternowl)

The FIA is launching an investigation into the Surtees and Massa incidents. I bet you a dollar that the recommended solution is to ban open cockpits. By 2011, F1 wil have closed cockpits and A/C.
Jalopnik re-did their website a few weeks ago and it has not worked well for me since. Jalopnik has a pic of Massa shortly after the accident. His right eye is open. His left eye is closed, there is a big cut at the left edge of the left eye. There is surprisingly little damage to the helmet. It is caved in a little where the impact occured, but it did not split or otherwise damage the whole helmet. It is not a gory pic.

Without the Surtees and Massa incidents, the one race suspension likely would have been a lesser punishment. Since Alonso, Piquet and Renault are not even in the top ten, it won't affect the championships, but it will send a message throughout the paddock.
Let's face it, a spring and a wheel fall off during the same race weekend. Every person on every team needs a wake up call to be more diligent.
The Valencia organizers will be royally pissed off because Alsono won't be there, but the punishment fits the infraction. By not informing Alonso that his wheel wasn't properly tightened, the team could have caused the death of a course worker or another driver.
Since the same crew services both cars, the officials had no choice but to suspend Piquet, Alonso and the entire Renault team. Besides, Alonso only got the pole by running extremely light in qualifying; he didn't stand a chance of being on the podium even without his nut falling off.

How do you know that one of the mechanics didn't fubar the installation?
The FIA is investigating. If a mechanic failed to install the spring correctly, then Brawn may yet be suspended. If a part broke, despite BrawnGP's QC and testing program, it is unlikely anyone will be suspended.
Your point is pointless. The difference between the two incidents is clear: the cause of the BrawnGP incident has yet to be determined while the cause of the Renault incident is obvious negligence (both in wheel mounting and failure to tell Alonso) and a comensurate punishment has been meted out.

Quote, originally posted by Needsdecaf »

Not informing Alonso? Brake ducts have malfunctioned without the wheel falling off. The team could have and should have notified Alsono that wheel could come off. Are you so callous with the drivers and course workers' safety that you can't even admit the team messed up?
I thought you were some sort of engineering type? I majored in liberal arts but even I can figure out that there is no way to tether a spinning wheel by itself. The hub is tethered so that in the event of a suspension failure or a crash the wheel/hub combo does not fly off of the car. Even then, when the crash is severe enough and enough of the nose area is destroyed the wheel/hub combos have been known to still fly off. If the wheel isn't properly mounted to the hub, it is not tethered to the car. That is why it was such a failing on Renault's part to not notify Alonso.

Quote, originally posted by Needsdecaf »

Right. The fact is that the team, including Alonso, is to blame for this incident and they will lose constructor points for the next race and their multi-million dollar appearance money. You seem to be the only one who can't fathom how serious their infraction was. If that wheel had killed someone, would you still say let them race but take away constructor points? The only person who has a beef here is Piquet, but since he couldn't drive his way out of a wet paper bag, he'll get the same points in Valencia that he gets almost every race, zero.
