I'm looking for a new transmission for my car and I was told that there's a difference in the transmission for a turbo vs the N/A. So I don't end up snagging a tranny from an 850/S70 that's not compatible, can someone tell me what the actual differences are? Is it actually physically different? Or are we talking M56L vs. M56H which (from what I understand) only differ in terms of gear ratio?

Thanks! http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Edit: Also, getting more specific now: how about a tranny from a '93 850. Will it fit/work?

You would have to do a FULL swap to get an 850 transmission to work in our car.

Why all the hating on the stock one for the T5? Its very respectable.

Re: (Bender)

It's got a chunk missing and was leaking. Then I summarily destroyed it further by shearing a bolt. Also, the fluid came out black the first time I drained it, so I'm kind of worried about it.

So, new tranny for me for sure. Just trying to find the best/cheapest option.

What do you mean by "full swap" anyway? And can someone educate me on what to do about the dual-mass flywheel? Do I seriously have to buy a brand new one at $700+?

Fly wheel can be resurfaced at 100 bucks unless you really have toasted it.

That's what has me confused: I could have sworn I had read you can't/shouldn't resurface a dual-mass flywheel...

Yeah, well, I'm still trying to find out if anyone knows what's different between the M56 transmissions between models, years, and turbo vs. N/A...

Also, I'm not so sure that my gears aren't toasted. Although, it has never popped out of gear and it feels like it shifts smoothly (as far as I know

It can be resurfaced, But finding someone who will do it is the problem

You could buy a single mass flywheel from an 850r I believe, here part number 9454774 the flywheel is $275 new

Negative - they have 22 splines on the output shaft, we have 23, it will not fit without a FULL transmission swap.

Yes it would be nice to put a single mass in, BUT it would cause a lot more stress on our drive line components (much more vibration transmitted via single mass).

Blech. Well, I'm beginning to believe that putting $2k~$3k into a new transmission and clutch is silly and I'd be best just topping it off every few months or whatever and driving it until it either dies or I can afford a new car...

well every month your topping it off with what new fluid?

a Quart of redline cost $13 bucks from ipd. assuming that it doesn't need a full quart of oil. Maybe a quart will last two months.

so 13* 6 bottles needed in a year is $78 plus time and shipping or gas money to run to the store

I don't know, I mean $100 bucks a year could be used for something else.

Nah, not every month. Maybe every 4, at the most. When it seemed to be leaking a lot for a week or so, I drained it and still got almost 2 full quarts out.

And, that 100 bucks a year you are referring to is in opposition to the one-time $2k~$3k I'd have to spend...

I am doing SingleMass Fly wheel 850R clutch
with a M56L in my XC

the m56 is the same in a 93 as its in 08
The fly wheels might be different but trannys are the same.

Only issue I would see with output shafts being differnt you should be able to use the S60R clutchs for the dual mass wheels.

Give me a week and I will let you know LOL

http://www.vandsautodismantlers.com/ had two M56LK's in their yard. I didn't go with them due to the cross-border issues/shipping. They quoted me $1,100US + 150US shipping to the border.
Hey, thanks. But...

Indeed. It's one of those sites you don't always tell everyone about, because if you did, all the cool parts would be gone! A true treasure for car buffs in need of rare and random parts.....at the click of a button.
