luscious red lips [now with pics]

Got a set of pegs for a good price but badly damaged, used bondo plastic metal and a metal file on the lips and painted them

Looking good! Only thing I am afraid of is that when you mount the tires you will have to touch up the paint as paint isn't as durable as most of us would like it to be. Get pics up as soon as you have them mounted.

Last set of rims I repaired were done with JB wield. It worked very well.
I'm curious to find out how bondo plastic metal compares. When it dries is it smooth or rubbery like with JB wield?

It actually comes off surprisingly easy. Ideally I'd like a solution where I didn't have to re-tape off the wheels, maybe spraying the entire wheel with a clear coat? Would the clear coat ruin the platinum shiny finish? Or is there a paint-on clear coat that I could apply directly to the lip?

The paint will come off at a few places when they mount the tires. The only thing you can do is touch it up. Clear coat wont help.

Wow. Not bad! I need to see them on the car to make final decision though.

If you have any shops around that do powder coating you could look into how much it would cost to do just a lip. I've got a shop that will do a whole wheel for $50-100 depending on color and whether it has to be special ordered. Paint is very hard to not chip up when mounting...

Urethane paint is your best bet, but with something like that lip it's hard not to chip.
