Nerd that I am, I bought a cross-shaped lug wrench, and made a holder for it, that fits nicely inside the spare tire, doesn't rattle around.

It's made from an ABS pipe straight joint. Just cut some notches so it fits the tire iron on top, and the plastic hold-down on the bottom.

Wrecking yards will often only charge you $2 for a tire iron. Also take a moment to inspect all your lugnuts if they are original P1 style. If the thin steel top cover is deformed too much then the factory size lug wrench may not fit and you can get stuck on the side of the road without a way to remove them in the case of a flat. Updated P1 lug nuts have the additional horizontal ridge in them to somewhat stop the deformation.

Good tip I'll check the fit on more of them. The ones I tried are 19mm. I think mine are all aftermarket lug nuts, as there is no keyed jug nut on any of the wheels. I read that the C30 is supposed to come with a key for the security lug nuts, but mine didn't come with one.

Cool idea. I make sure my, my wife's and my kid's cars all have the T-wrench. Raddling is a delema. I have a fender protector pad that I lay over the spare tire and the wrench on top of that.

Have you tried removing the lug nuts with that OEM wrench? If They've been put on with an impact driver, it's a real struggle without a cross wrench.

I've actually been really enjoying the stock stereo in the C30. Mind you, I had a Mitsubishi Delica before, which is a pretty noisy vehicle, so it was hard to appreciate the stereo at all. It's all, "where you put your eyes."

I haven't. I do however have a cheapo set of tools to do some basics on the car also in the trunk. I torque down the wheels myself, so it shouldn't be an issue.

I have the cross wrench but I also added a Dewalt 1/2" lithium powered impact gun to the cargo area. Makes tire changes real quick.

That's a good setup, the quick and convenient, as well as the the manual backup. I like sojun80's practice of only tightening the nuts by hand, ensuring they can be undone by hand.

Have you checked the PSI in your spare lately? Flats are so infrequent with modern tires, it can get neglected. Mine was down to like 20PSI when I bought the car.

Great idea and creative on that T Wrench set up!

Can't remember what the original looks like but here is what I came up with. The cost for new wasn't that great but thought it might break again. Didn't use the split washer as it compressed and deformed the plastic threads too much in order to seat. The clear tube is for centering the carriage bolt. Did have to sand the top of the carriage bolt further than in the picture shown.

Yeah, the whole time I was making it, filing away at that piece of ABS, getting plastic shavings all over the place, I was thinking, "Y'know, I could just lay a rag under the cross-wrench to keep it from rattling..."

Good fix, CASwede. That's great, using parts readily available at the hardware store, to create a custom part. Looks like the only part you had to fabricate was drilling and filing that metal piece at the end.

Thanks. That was a fender washer so only had to cut the edges off with a hacksaw. Grinder is still in storage.
