Hi,
I was always thinking about to get one ever since I had a VW and it was popular "mod". But I never drove a car with LSD installed. Of course I've read about it and know how it works and what it does. But it's all in theory. I would like to hear opinions on the topic. Would you go for it? Have you driven a car with one installed?
I don't autocross my car and I'm almost positive it's not going to happen (at least, for now). It's pretty much a daily commuter, but I drive a lot (25 Kmiles/year on average) and I like to drive fast and legal.
Again, would like to hear positive/negative comments, especially from ppl with a "hand-on" experience.

Thanks,
Kirill
Re: LSD (OK, Limited Slip Differential) - is this worth it? (Papa_Kirlo)

In fact you can feel the LSD work in so many situations that would have led to wheel spin had I not been lucky enough to have the LSD. To be honest, I don't drive my S70 T5 very much at all since there is no LSD. It bugs the juice out of me when I go to make a turn while under a minimal influence of boost and all I get in return is a bunch of slipping and then having to back off. The C70 just pulls like a tractor in the direction I’m pointing it…
Honestly, it does make a tremendous difference in the personality of the car and will give you an advantage when tossing the car around in the twisties. The car will “pull” itself back into the line when exiting a corner at speed and while under boost…it’s really a strange sensation but feels much like what a RWD drive car will do when you get it to finally hook-up; but only the C will do this in the front-end.
Another little tid-bit that may help is the way the car performs in comparison to my S70. I have yellow konis, IPD sways, lowering springs, some poly bushings, big brakes, and some other little goodies on the car. The C has Bilstine TCs, LSD, and 18” wheels…that’s it. Now, when I take the cars over the same section of road…the C70 takes the S70 every time. The reason why is not a measure of HP either, since I did this test before the turbo upgrade…so my observation after playing for an hour was that the C70 can handle me putting more power to the ground throughout the entire turn and hit even more power on the apex to exit. The car just seems to be pulled through the turn as if there was a cable attached to a car in front of me… The S70 in spite of all the suspension mods just never gets this feeling…it will simply threaten to break free in the power wheel.
Now, if you take into play the upgraded turbo and having more power than what was stock…you will find the LSD IMHO a necessity. It is without question the best mod to do… Oh, and here is something funny…you could spend more $$$ on shocks, springs, sways, bushings, wheels, and all that and still need the LSD to exit the corner. If / when I do another car, the first round of mods will be another LSD. I’d take this over AWD any-day just for the weight reduction and power savings… (Not to take anything away from AWD, I will buy an R when the time is right…just for now I can’t get enough out of my C.)
Hope this helps!
Cheers,
Prospero
Re: LSD (Papa_Kirlo)

I'm intrigued by this. Sorry for my ignorance but what is the LSD, and how much does it cost to have it installed?

Yes about 99% of the time it is only made for Manual Transmission cars. I hope this helps. God Bless

Re: LSD (dicostal)

Depends on the shop. I would venture that you're out $3k+ to do the job...including the LSD. But while you are in there...you should do the clutch and a few other things since all the guts are out at this point.
Cheers,
Prospero

Re: LSD (Prospero)

3K??? WOW, I will have to live with out it then. It does sound like a great mod thought, just too rich for me. If my clutch ever burns out I will think about it, but I doubt I will ever burn the clutch enough where I need to replace it, in 15 years of driving it has not happened yet...

Ciao
