Ok, I just did my PCV system, replacing and or cleaning where needed. While I had the intake off I cleaned the throttle-body and manifold. The reason I did this is I was using 2 to 3 quarts of full synthetic between changes. Well anyway I am, AGAIN, a quart down with about 1000 miles since the service.
I also put a boost gauge in about a month ago of so. It was a SunPro, but I noticed only about 10 psi and I took it off the red line from the TCV. So today I unstalled an AutoMeter ProComp Ultra-Lite and moved the line to the intake as I should and I am still only getting 10 psi.
Could the oil use be as a result of a failing turbo or what? Any help will be appreciated.
By the way, she has 104000 on her, she's an '04 and a GT.

Re: Low boost and excessive oil use!!!!??? (Overun73)

What gear is the GT transmission in when you're doing your pulls that max out at 10 psi?
Have you checked to see at what pressure the wastegate is starting to open at? Should be 6-7 psi if stock, but cand (and should) be adjusted up to 8-9 psi.
Have you tried a compression and leak-down test?
When was the last time the sparkplugs were replaced and with what type of plugs?
Cheers,
J

Re: Low boost and excessive oil use!!!!??? (soupandspoons)

I am in at least 3rd gear.
The gate is moving around 8 psi.
I have not done a compression or leak-down (and I don't know how to do the leak-down)
And I an not sure when the pluges where last changed, I got the car 5 thousand miles ago, but I know they NEED to be changed and they are currently Bosch Iridiums. I am trying to get the normal maintenance items done that I know where neglected but I just Haven't gotten to them yet.

At you current rate of oil usage (1 quart / 1000 miles), assuming that there isn't an obvious oil leak on the oil lines to and from the turbo or one of the engine seals, is bad rings and/or valve seals, which is $$$$$$. To put this in perspective, if the car was in warranty, you would be looking at a new engine at your current usage.
I think that you need to take it to the dealer or your local competent indy mechanic and get them to track this down. If it was me, I would change the plugs and do a compression test while I'm at it. That way, you might be able to at least trace it to a cylinder(s).
Best of luck,
J

i had a similar problem - was going through a quart every 1000 miles - and the dealer did indeed replace the engine. i never got a detailed explanation of what was causing the problem, but i guess the dealer doesn't do engine rebuilds so they didn't care. covered under warranty thank god.

I've had the car from new and am pretty OCD about maintenance (M1 every 4500 miles).
Are you seeing any signs of usage? Smoke? I would estimate at least one cylinder has failed rings. The turbo sounds like it's shot but should not contribute that much to the heavy oil usage. As mentioned, time for a compression test and more than likely an engine rebuild.
Hope all goes well. You may want to look for a used R engine. Talk to Chilled Man.
