Last fall, I traded my S60R for an XC90 (5 cyl). I was sad to say goodbye to the R, and driving an SUV took some getting used to. I now have 8,000 miles on the XC, have made the mental adjustment to driving a larger vehicle, and am now very happy. I am getting 18.6 MPG, and am really enjoying this vehicle. The I5 engine is great - the power is always there, no matter what speed, and the transmission shifts smoothly and quickly, and always chooses the appropriate gear the first time (i.e. no gear hunting). And the turning radious is outstanding (ask any R owner about negotiating the drive-thru lane at the local Taco Bell).
One point of interest is the car drives better in warmer temperatures. As soon as the temps got above 50 or so, the XC started going around corners much better. I think this may be the Michelin Synchrones, which don't seem to be very well suited to snow and cold.
As for build quality - I have had ZERO problems. This vehicle is very well built, and designed.
My only complaint is no AUX input for the stereo (for Sat radio, or MP3 player).

On the highway, I try to keep the speed below 70, but do hit 80 on a regular basis. Around town, I try to anticipate lights, and drive smoothly (which is not the same as driving slowly, I do accelerate as fast as the next guy). Long story short, I do put a lot of effort into improving my MPG, but nothing out of the ordinary.

My wife is a soccer Mom and realtor. She gets about 17 in mostly non-highway driving. We have hit 22 on highway trips when using premium gas.
Jack

Re: Loving My XC90 (Mr. Kotter)

In the two years we have had our XC90 (33,000 miles worth) our mileage records indicate the lowest mileage in one tank to be 18MPG (which occurred only once, early on, while in Europe on yhe Autobahn) and the highest to be 24MPG. The average MPG overall has been around 21 MPG with Synchrones and 20MPG with Bridgestone Blizzaks (used during winter). Our tire pressure is set at 36 all around, or 38 all around when fully loaded, and we use 93 octane BP or Shell. Oil is Mobil 1 5w-30. Driving is a mix of rural and city.
