Looking for a worst case scenario on cost. (cept for a theif finding it and taking the whole car!) If I have to replace the key/key fob what's a ballpark I'm gonna spend? (The dealer is closed or I'd call) I have my spare for now and I hope I cna find the other one but it's got me wondering......
Also wondering if a switchblade type style can work on an '03? I see them on ebay but the key is already cut, I'm guessing the dealer replaces that part and reprograms it? Wondering if anyones gone through that and how much that ran? or if there's a way to DIY? (not the key cutting of course)

Re: lost key (16vt)

I have a 2002 XC and lost my key and key fob. Including programing I spent close to $200.00 Canadian to replace. Hope that it is cheaper in USA.

I bought a fob and key (non-chipped) from the dealer, and had the fob programmed, and it was close to $175 USD. I'll have to pull the receipts out, but IIRC, it was ~$100 for the fob, ~$25 for the key, and 1/2 shop labor to program the fob. It's my understanding that the newer keys have chips in them, and need to be programmed as well. I honestly wouldn't be surprised at something between $250-$300 for a replacement key. Here's a thought, w/ the high cost of replacing a key. Could you claim this under the comprehensive section of your auto insurance? I've got a $100 deductible on my comp., and that's a lot cheaper than a whole new fob and key, w/ the associated programming.

If I don't find it after I tear the house apart, I'll look into that, the thought never crossed my mind, thanks.

Re: lost key (Mk1Racer)

Keys and remotes are both about $100 (P2 cars, cheaper for earlier cars) or so (retail) from the dealer.
Add $25 EACH for software AND whatever labor your dealer want to charge for cutting and initializing. Of course 98's and earlier have no software
Wherever you got a key for $25 you got one heckofa deal

And based on the post below yours, looks like there are others that got it for ~ the same as I did.
