Lost all power and then it came back...??

Lost all power last night, as if the car had no turbo, just the I5. No CELs, no warnings, zip, zilch, nada. On the way to work this morning, same thing, and then, half way there, it suddenly came back. I haven't read up on all the power loss threads and I don't have much time today to search'n read, could someone list the most probable causes? IIRC it's vaccuum line or valve related or something..? TIA
ps - I don't think the car was in limp mode, since it still moved at highway speeds and someone told me limp mode only allowed some 10-20mph drives. It was very hot yesterday, 90's, and I did notice less power throughout the day until it lost all boost on my way home last night on cruise control (I only noticed when I tried to pass someone). Not sure if it went into some fail safe mode due to the heat?? Today is in the 60's/70's and the boost came back...sounds like something's on its last legs

I hope the TCV is ok, it's the ipd one and it's done fine for almost a year.

sorry to hear, maybe you can stop by BVV and get codes read as a freebie? CELs mean squat
you could also use the stalk trick to see if you can find stored codes by yourself, but you won't gain any info if you don't know which codes were tripped before
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=33590

FEO - cool trick! I got the "DTCS IN CAR" msg. I'll try to swing by BVV tomorrow for a scan. Thanks!

The only thing I noticed while it lost all the power was that I could still hear the air intake open up and I could hear a turbo whine, though smaller than usual. I didn't feel any boost or felt a little, as in 5psi at most. I don't have a boost gage, just the butt dyno meter. I figured I had an open hose or a stuck valve, until this morning, when all of a sudden, the boost came back. I can hear the turbo whine now as well and it is louder. From the rest of the morning commute drive and the small lunch run, the car is running smooth and boosting smooth. It has 90k miles right now, it's always run good while I've owned it and the only recent work done to it was an oil change and new fuel filter last Friday.

Re: (S60R1)

I wonder if you're having an intermittent injector issue, after saying the fuel filter was changed. But I would think stuttering and rough idle would accompany power loss if this was the case.

Between yesterday and today only once for about a minute did the car lose boost. It still boosted, but only felt like about half way. Doesn't feel like a fuel cutoff or anything like that, it feels like a TCV or something. I wonder if it can be the wastegate? Oh well, eventually something's gona go and then I'll know what it is haha

Need help with DTCs

I recently lost all turbo power and then it came back. The car's been fine for 2 days now, but with some half way boost pulls here and there. I got the car scanned for DTCs and here's what I got:
CEM-5B01 Left heater pad faulty signal (this I know is the driver seat heater, which burned up a couple of months ago)
These I don't know what they are:
ECM-6805 Turbocharger (TC) control system boost pressure fault - Pressure too high (Status: DTC is found active)
SUM-0244 Control module internal fault (Status: DTC is found not active)
UEM-0039 General lighting signal missing (Status: DTC is found not active)
Can anyone help me with these?
Also, what does the status mean, i.e. active/not active?
TIA

Re: Need help with DTCs (S60R1)

I would assume your TCV is bad, unfortunately, and active means it didn't just throw the code and stored it, but rather it's an ongoing or repetitive occurrence. No idea what the control module is referring to, could be anything. Lighting signal missing may be a bulb out warning?
Not active is probably something that happened, was logged, but not occurring any longer.

Re: Need help with DTCs (JRL)

Thanks for the feedback guys, appreciate it.
I'll grab a new TCV, though I might go back to the stock volvo unit, considering it worked fine for 3-4 years and the ipd one didn't even last one year.
If the general lighting code comes up when a bulb burns up then that should be it, as I've had 2 rear bulbs burn out on me to date. Other than that, I have no idea.
JRL - any clue as to what the internal fault on the SUM might have been? Just a glitch that got recorded one day?

Got the TCV installed on Nov 7 last year.
Since the boost came back, I'm ruling out any holes or leaks in any of the hoses. I suppose a hose can be clogged, but the car runs smooth ~90% of the time, with 10% of the time being on/off boost glitches/spikes or about 1/2 boost peaks under acceleration. I don't know if a clogged hose can cause intermittent issues like these..?

Re: Need help with DTCs (S60R1)

I'll probably bite the bullet, buy a stock TCV from BVV, swap it out and see if it fixes it. If that doesn't work, I'm gona be forced to have BVV test the car.

Re: (chinaonnitrous1)

Ok, so the car's been running fine ever since I posted that I was going to get a stock TCV to see if the ipd unit was malfunctioning. I think it heard me
Until yesterday, when I lost about 1/2 of boost power under acceleration. Between then and now, it's been on/off. Sometimes I have full boost, sometimes I have about 1/2 boost, all in the same drive.
I'll pick up a stock TCV soon to see if that's it. If you guys know any other parts I should look at, let me know.

Quote, originally posted by chinaonnitrous1 »

Any notice of cooling fans running at 100% or extremely loud?

Yesterday I did notice the fans came on as I started the car. It was still warm from the previous drive, but not much...if the fans are running when they are not supposed to be, what does that tell you? Bad thermostat?
