I'm looking to buy a red '01 XC70 which I really like. I've owned several other Volvos but never a XC. I was shocked to find on consumer reports used car report that they rated the '01 XC70 very poorly. It was rated "the worst" in the following categories; 1. cooling, 2. transmission, 3. drive system, 4. electrical, 5. suspension, 6. paint, trim, rust, 7. body hardware. Now the more recent years '02-'05 had much more promising reports. I really like this car but I do not want to buy a potential problem. Any info about this vehicle would be appreciated.

There is a fan recall and as long as that was performed no difference from any other year.
Transmission. These can be problematic but as long as the trans has been serviced, the 2 software upgrades done and the stop neutral function removed, no difference from an 02 (and newer) trans.
I don't know what they mean by "drive system" it has the older viscous coupling AWD but if the car has always had even (tread) tires no more than any other years.
Beval gears can be a problem in a higher mileage example but if it has been properly serviced and the tires have always been even, no more than most any other AWD. 03's and newer have Haldex. Better, sure but a lot more money right now.
Electrical. 01's in general have had a few more problems than newer modela but usually not so bad. Some cars are much worse than others, most are about the norm for a Volvo
Suspension. No different than a newer model
Paint, trim, etc.
The only thing on an 01 vs. a newer model are the 2 long roof strips. 01's all had a problem, they faded and faded badly. If an owner asked about it they were replaced under warranty. You can always have them painted not very much money to do
Rust: No issues whatsoever
There is a lower mileage red 01 V70XC up for auction tomorrow, THURSDAY, 5/18, If you're interested contact me tonight
EDIT:
Actually I checked and it's an 02 V70XC Venetian red with 47K miles.
It's the only red XC and the sale has nearly 400 Volvo coming
JRL
