I'm looking for new tires for my V50. The wheels are 18 x 8.5 Evolve R5s. I'm going for a 235 40 18 with a speed rating of W, and load rating of 93-95, love to drive agressive, but still would like to get a somewhat good wear rating so while I've had TW as low as 140 and loved the grip , I still want grip but don't want to go below a 260 TW rating. all suggestions welcomed. I've had falken 512s which are great for an all season but am leaning toward a conti 3.

For what it's worth, I LOVE my Toyo Proxes 4 as an all season tire with great performance, and "comfortable" ride.
I previously had Yokohama AVS ES100 tires which jarred my teeth loose. Granted, they handled amazingly during extremely aggressive cornering. But you're not doing that often enough to justify the ride.
The Proxes 4 is still a performance tire, but the ride is so nice too. I don't feel like I sacrificed much performance either.
I have not driven them in the snow yet so I can't comment on their winter performance.

As I posted in another thread the Kumho Ecsta MX appears to be a an awesome price/performance tire. I'm very pleased.

Re: (quick)

I had AVS 100 and they don't work well with high camber FWD, and you can't swap them around on the rim which means bad cupping on the inner tread. Great tires for say a Camaro. I have the PZero Nero M&S and have really been pushing them I'm happy, 9not as happy as the AVS 100 in terms of ultimate grip) but with 15K and the ride is just a smooth, the grip just as good, and it is quite as day one, I really can't complain. I expect 35 to 45k before they need to be replaced and I replace tires at the wear bar or every two years after which they don't really perform well, at least IMO.

I have also gone with the PZero Nero M&S (hated the stock Energy MXV4 S8s), have about 15 k miles on them and am happy with them. They seem to be wearing well, grip in dry and wet is good. Worlds better than the stock Michelins. In the snow I had no issues. I'd get them again.
Re: (v50t5black)

I put Michelin PS2's on mine and they are fantastic in both wet and dry handling and not to jarring or noisy.
Although im thinking of getting a new set of HRE rims and might get the goodyear F1 (best handling tire on the market right now) or those fancy new carbon fiber sidewall one's once I see a few reviews on them

Im not racing SCCA (yet ) Plus I like the design of their C20 unless someone else knows of a nice lightweight split 8 spoke racing style rim with a nice polished lip
I'm open to suggestions since those are about $1100 apiece!

I have bfg kdw2's and they are amazing. they hold their own on the autoX course and have a treadwear rating of 300 but grip better than anything continental offers for half the price. and they look flippin sweet

Other companies like Fikse and Kinesis make higher-quality racing and racing-style wheels for those prices or slightly lower (if you talk to the right dealers).
Also check out http://www.ccwheel.com - 3-piece forged... high quality and cheaper. Many racers use them.

-Chris

Re: (Tarheelvolvo)

I don't like any "lightweight" rims for a 3600 lbs car with nominal load. You asking for trouble. You need a good set of kinda sorta HEAVY rims. Even my very strong OZ superleggeraz are maxed out on a 2800 lbs nominal load and there are many VW guys that have bent then too. This just ain't a light car and carries the weight and the nominal load mainly on the front which gets even more load when braking for a pothole. DON"T LOOK FOR HONDA FRIDAY NIGHT RIMS for you daily lead sled car.... bad juju will happen. IMO you should go with what looks good and something that has some decent weight.

I have the 505A and a set of the classics on my mustang, and want the SP500 for the Volvo
Only $2400 a set so about 1/2 the price of HRE
Also I have experience with and suggest...
Michellin PS2..Awesome tires
BFG KD and KDW...Both awesome, but the KD doesnt like wet roads too much
Khumo MX..Another awesome tire, holds well and very little road noise
