Hey fellow ss members. I have a question. Soon, I will be getting a used car for myself. My parents will help with the purchase, but I want to contribute a fair amount aswell. I have looked at Volvo's and love my parents 944 which I get to drive. Right now I have a Suzuki Swift which is a decent car only because of the great gas milage.
I thought about getting a used Volvo, but with the repairs my parents have come into needing with their cars and the price they've paid, I'm not too sure I want one anymore unless it's new. The value of my dad's car is about the price range I am looking at. A good friend of mine has a '95 Jetta GLS 5spd. I really like it. It's fast and fun. And he hasn't had any problems with it that I know of. I was thinking of going with a VW for my car. Either a Jetta or a Golf. I'm leaning towards a Jetta because I like sedans, unless I can find a nice 4dr Golf. I was wondering what you guys think about picking up a $5000-7500 VW? I did a search on AutoTrader and a lot came up in that price range with very low miles, around 80k or even less. Of course, I would do modifications to the car. Mostly speed. Look's don't matter much. Anyway, I know a few of you know some stuff about VW and I was wondering whats you take on them. Thanks.
Alex
[This message has been edited by omega6_virus (edited 08-30-2002).]

You could probably get a third generation Golf or Jetta in that price range, although probably not a VR6. I'd suggest you watch for a Jetta GT, or Jetta/Golf K2. They had the sport cloth and the '97 K2s also had fuba antennas and the golf ball shift knob which are kind of cool.

i would suggest an online car search service to see the used cars in your area.
i found my c70 thru AutoTrader and cars.com (the person listed in both).
then you can check out the cars you like or are just interested in. stick with a company you know builds strong cars. for 5000-7000 you can get a pretty good Jap car that will give you good mileage, enough power, and reliability.

The Mk3 Golf/Jetta with the 2.0 and 5spd manual is a solid car. My dad bought a '96 Golf new, and it has been VERY reliable. All of the problems he has had were minor (annoying, but nothing that left him stranded).
Try to find one with around 50-70K miles. My dad's Golf is at 92K, and it's going to need some suspension work soon. The OBDI engines might be a little better for modifying, as I think they respond better to ECU upgrades ('93 to '94or'95).

It's not reall the costs of the repairs, but more of the waits and time and loss of a car during them. I really like Bertones as do most volvo enthusiasts. I will check it out for sure though. And have my mechanic drive it and take a look at it.
But, I think I'm strongly leaning towards Jetta or 4dr Golf for my next car. I cannot wait.
