Performance of an S40 T5 AWD

Hey guy, I currently own a 2001 S60 T5 M. I'm looking to sell the vehicle and replace it with something a little more fun to drive. What kind of potential does an S40 T5 AWD 6MT hold? How do they perform stock and with aftermarket modifications? What kind of 0-60 times can one expect? How does the vehicle compare in terms of driving dynamics as compared to other cars? In terms of aftermarket mods I'd be looking at a stage 1 tune, an intake, lowering springs and sway bars. Thanks for all the input.
*Excuse the typo in the post title, it won't let me modify it.*

Re: Performance of an S40 T5 AWD (aidan)

People may disagree, but as far as the car's performance it is not great for it's class or price range. There are better cars to be had for the money, but people buy them for their style, sensibility, safety, and practicality. Their are plenty of small bolt-on's for the car but you have to spend a lot of money for your car to look individual from everyone else's. Hope this helps.

Seems like a test drive would answer most of your questions.
I find it's got some good scoot stock, but it is a heavy SOB (even more so with AWD), so it's not really anything special. Some guys on here are putting good numbers down with some basic modifications (read: bolt ons and PC modifications)

I understand that for the money I could get a much faster car, but I'm looking for something unique. What kind of performance potential does that car hold?

The T5 engine has been said to easily handle 400+whp as a daily driver. The ATP turbo upgrade is the only bolt-on kit available at the moment for quite the price, but it at least shows you how strong these engines are. But, if you're not looking for quite that much power, a tune, dp, and exhaust will give you some very nice numbers.

Thanks revolve. With a tune, DP and exhaust what kind of numbers are you looking at? What other vehicles on the road can you compare the performance to?

Well, some members (like mattdoc) are putting close to 300 whp down with those mods + a larger intercooler. Without being too specific, anywhere close to 300 to the wheels is very well respected for a daily driver. You'll surprise so many people.

Ultimately that's what I'm looking for. My S60 T5 is quick, but I'm hesitant to modify it due to the mileage and FWD layout. I'm not expecting STI performance, but with those mods what could the car be compared to. A lot of it comes down to how effectively the AWD system puts down the power....

Re: (aidan)

the S60 T5 block is a lot more moddeable than the S40 T5 block. so in terms of outright power, the S60 is the better bet.
but, the S40 is a nimbler handler. dont expect much difference in handling with the AWD tho, as its not designed to improve handling in corners per se as its still largely FWD biased.

I haven't driven any modified Volvos but my own but the AWD T5 feels much nicer than the FWD. Should make your power more 'accessible' too

Haha yet i can rip AWD a new butt hole from the line and rolling but they will kill me in the snow haha .... BTW with DP, exhaust, intake on 93 you should be around 210 ish wheel which is ok but with tune and FMIC you will be smoking

Ive rode in quite a few modified S60's including some R's and cant say that they feel fast for some reason. I think the S40 is a good platform for a unique peppy street car. For the money isnt going to be an animal but still fun.
The AWD system is alright but considering it is predominantly a FWD with back up AWD setup its nothing that special. Id only get one if you find a good deal, wouldnt spend thousands more for one over a FWD 6M.
Definitely something different which is why i got one. Been in the subaru, nissan, and honda game but was looking for something uncommon Especially since my brother sand bagged me and bought the IS300 i wanted
