I'm looking for a inexspensive sedan or wagon to commute 120 miles a day and still little fun to drive. Also needs to needs to get better MPG than my GTO which gets 20MPG.
I drove a 96' 850R
red sedan today w/165K on it and they are asking $5900.
The car is at a small used car dealer.
According to the dealer the timing belt was done 20K ago (w/receipts), with the front brakes.
The car needs tires, one good dent above gas door, rear brakes look like thety will need replacing, worn drivers bolster, and needs a detail bad. Car was serviced by a local Volvo dealer by PO.
The lifters sounded like they were ticking a little, would this be common for a volvo with 165K on it? How do the transmissions hold up? What would be some trouble spots to look out for?
They came down to $5500 for it, sound fair? I was thinking closer to 5K. Any comments?

Looks OK but For a couple of grand more I just bought a 98 S70 T5 5 speed with 90K, (for sale) or check out one of my wagons that I have for sale.
All are 100% and need nothing and have a whole lot less miles. Personally I wouldn't start buying ANY car with that many miles if you're doing over 100 miles a day
Please look at the classifieds or email me
JRL

I dont think its to unreasonable.
I say offer 5, if it drives nice and doesn't leak oil that'd be a pretty good deal imo.

I get about 21-22 tops on the road and that's with premium.
Buy a stick Honda Civic or something like that if you want mileage, Volvos do NOT get great gas mileage

won't get much more than 20MPG. Not a bad deal and something I would consider if your commute was not as long.850's are a solid, but at 150k plus you may be headed for more costly repairs...also make sure you take the car on the highway,Bent wheels are a possibility with that kind of mileage. If you can get it for $4500, I'd say go for it.

At 165K miles, ATF (Dexron-III) will be black. I would not power flush, in fear that debris will break loose and cause problems.
Here are procedures that I used to drain and fill...
http://www.volvoforums.com/m_25657/tm.htm
Best option is to purchase ATF DIY flush kit from
http://www.fcpgroton.com
Also, do NOT use power steering fluid. Our systems use Dexron-III.
Also, do NOT use OEM 90C/195F thermostat, purchase 87C/190F Wahler from
http://www.fcpgroton.com
Also, coolant system leakdown test, engine compression test, and Visual Inspection from Volvo Dealership ($130) would verify condition of car.
BTW -- someone stole the "R" badge from the trunk deck.

In the picture of the backend, it appears that the trunklid is of a slightly different hue that the surrounding panels. And from my experience, I think the "Volvo" and the "850" badges are not in the correct place. Judging from this picture, I would be willing to speculate that the trunklid has been replaced. Any thoughts?

Duganc-
In case your curious about other retail R prices, there is a red 96 850R (854) in Knoxville TN for sale at a small Volvo indie dealer. The car has the OEM 18" BBS Tritons w/ good tires, 158k, and is in very good condition (aside from minor paintwork issues). The drivers seat, suede and all, shows negligible wear. Also has an IPD exhaust-- other upgrades unknown. His asking price is 6995.
