This is a post I saw on Honda Tech. Go a little bit down on the first page, and you will see the XC90.
http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread/1703390

Re: Look at this WRECKED XC90! (david)

The driver of that Civic is one lucky, but unworthy SOB.
The damage on the XC90 is rather curious. Both corners smashed, but the center, including A/C condensor is untouched. She must have hit something else on the right side.
What is that sticking out of the driver's side door (lower) on the XC90? Doesn't look good.
regards,
MAJ

It is also amazing that none of the glass broke on the XC90. I wonder how many airbags deployed (front obviously) but what about the side curtain? She is really lucky she was in her XC90!

Really weird crash damage on that XC90!
The hood is buckled around and above the radiator, which doesn't even appear to have a scratch on it (those are just dead bugs which you see). Then the urethane bumper is gone, yet the metal underneith is still level and straight (but a bit damaged on the end).
In all honesty, it doesn't appear those two vehicles were in the same accident... the damage just doesn't add up.
One more thing... how did the driver of the XC90 get a concussion? Hitting the side window????

It seams like after the cars collided they hit something else.

The passenger compartment on the civic looks very comprimized (SP?), the XC90 looks like
it did as designed. XC90 externals took the damage and the passenger area looks like it was
very intact.
Looks like the civic engine was pushed back into the passenger area, what a design. NTSA testing
probably rated the civic well in their tests, take a look at the real world!!

Re: Look at this WRECKED XC90! (calridng)

Careful, before drawing too many conclusions from these pictures. They were clearly taken *after* the cars were towed away from the scene. The towing process may add damage, eg, the missing bumper may have been removed to make it easier to tow, etc. On the Civic, it is very hard to tell where the engine is.
Three things should be very clear from the original thread:
1) Drinking must never mix with driving.
2) Always wear your seat belt.
3) Accidents happen. A well designed car like an XC90 can make the difference between walking away and death.

Wow, sorry to hear of the accident, but glad to hear you wife is doing OK.
As for the accidenet damage, I am guessing the two vehicles connected on left front corners, like those tests they show on 20/20. Both vehicles probably also hit other objects aftwards. But it is hard to figure out how the Volvo radiator and front left tire are still mostly in tact.
Thanks for sharing.

No wonder why the insurance for my XC90 is lower than the Acura.
The pictures are enough proof.
