locked shifter

I have a 1997 850 GLT wagon (45K mi). Has anyone had trouble with the gearshift locking excessively? It happens almost every time I want to shift into reverse or drive, and I have to use the shiftlock override button to
break it loose.

The shift-lock switch is a usual suspect for problems that many Volvo owners seem to have. I think most owners usually have it replaced.

I agree with Drew, check the micro-switch.
