Lockable lug bolts?

Anyone able to find a set of lockable lug bolts that aren't Volvo?

Sounded like the Volvo ones can snap
.

Hoping I could get some for the new rims.

I've never seen a Volvo Locking Lug Nut snap.
I've had to remove a few w/o the key that the customer lost and they are very stout.

Re: Lockable lug bolts? (Oceans60R)

On my search, someone said they have had them snap. I am guessing they were probably over tightened and weakend. I wouldn't think they are much different overall from the normal OEM lug. Unless a different manufacturer.

Do NOT get the Volvo lugs, they are made by McGard and they WILL snap. Wish I had the pictures of one of my wheels that had to be destroyed thanks to a snapped bolt. They are a two-piece design and the head snaps off real easy leaving the threads and the seat in there. Lucky the $1300 didn't come out of my pocket.

IPD has a nice set that is a one-piece design. If I get any in the near future, that would be the way to go.

Hmm sounds like someone used an impact. At 100lbs of torque I can't see "snapping" the Volvo ones. $1300 to fix? Haven't they heard of a $5 easy out?

If those IPD ones will work...the 4 from them will be way cheaper than OEM lol

Oh, yes, indeedy - they WILL snap; see pic below for what the wheel looked like after removal.

If it was, it was Volvo using the impact tool as I had mine installed when I picked up my car at the Overseas Delivery Center in Goteborg. When I re-torqued my bolts, the first one I went to was one of the locking lug nuts. Sayonara, bay-bee! At nowhere near the torque limit, that sucker just twisted off like a piece of taffy.
It took a few approaches to finally relieve the R of this sucker:

You think that's bad, you should've seen the bill! I knew it was gonna be high when I could hear the mechanic cursing all the way back in the waiting room.
I finally went back there and he'd already put the torch away and was halfway through cutting it off; that was before the sledge came out!

Sometimes ya gotta laugh or you'd just break out in tears!

Re: (dradernh)

Wow, just Wow. I showed that to the guys in our shop and everyone's mouth dropped.

Everyone wants to know why weren't removal tools used (yes they make many styles of them) or why the guy just didn't drill the the lug?
Even the locking lugs are made of mild steel usually and drill out very easy.

That cutting and torch job is truly unique. I'd be very scared what that tech would due with a rounded off oil drain plug

You know what they say about assuming...

When I got my new tires, I told the shop not to use an impact wrench - and they did not. The head snapped off even before 100#/ft. Once again, they are junk. My wheel looked almost as bad as that one - and easy-out WILL NOT work here, but good luck if you ever want to try.

Fortunately, I didn't have to pay for the work - apparently, the local dealer has dealt with this problem before, they knew exactly what to do.

Re: Lockable lug bolts? (stealthS60AWD)

I have had McGards on all my cars for the past 15 years and I have never had a problem with them. This includes having my tires on all my cars rotated many, many times as well as having the wheels taken off to do servicing, brakes, etc.. It all depends on the person who is removing/tightening the lugs and locks and what tools they use.
Perhaps we are talking about two different things here. I looked at the packaging my Volvo security lug bolts came from and it says made in Germany. Does McGard manufacture in Germany? They are an American company no?

I probably would have crapped myself

Anyone use the tuner lugs from IPD? They are like 3 bucks a bolt.

I use them.

Theyre great!

I'm glad that mechanic isn't a doctor, he'd probably use a backhoe to deliver a baby.
Re: (LloydDobler)

I used to have McGard locks on my wheels until I stripped two keys and three of the locks themselves. I hand tighten my wheels......
Re: (ktm_525)

Volvo/McGard wheel-locks are indeed "gebildet in Deutschland" (made in Germany). Other McGard wheel-locks and products are also made in the USA and Japan.
Re: (Sweded)

It's not that all McGard products are bad, it's just that this design for the R is! The tapered seat is welded to the threads, and the top of the bolt (with the mystery hex) is poorly attached. It doesn't take much to rip the face off, leaving the bolt and the tapered seat fused in. No way to get the wheel off other than by some destruction!

I had McGard lugs on my last Mustang and they were fine - but they were lugs, not bolts. The set from IPD looks to be one-piece and forged, perfect for our R's.
Re: Lockable lug bolts? (stealthS60AWD)

Here's my 2cts. Locking lugs SUUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKKKKK! You don't live in the ghetto, they are more trouble than they're worth. If you lived in the city, maybe, but honestly, nobody's goin' to jail over our Peg's. This and a dollar forty eight will get you a bad cup o' coffee.
