little annoying creaks here and there?

Since the weather is warming up (at least here in CA), how many of you are hearing little annoying creaks here and there from expanding material in the car? I just picked up my car from the dealer and it was just today that I noticed the creaks. Since it's about 85 here in Los Angeles, I'm taking the plastic is expanding and causing these creaks. ALso, when turning into an incline, does your sunroof make noise? Not a big noise, but like 2 piece of rubber rubbing each other.

Any one you out there have these annoying little creaks or is the dealer to blame?

I had a squeak in my B pillar by the seat belt outlet. It is a known problem and has been corrected with some lube. My shifter still buzzes, and now the driver seat squeaks with vigourous turns... other than that only the rear window shade occasionally vibrates when extended, and then only when the subwoofer in the trunk thumps too loudly. All in all, a pretty quiet car except for the rear suspension clunk.

After coming back from the dealer to fix the so-called clunk, well the clunk is still there. I'll drive it for a day or two and see if these creaks and things are still there. They weren't there when I picked up the car, at least I didn't notice it back then.

I have the seat belt squeak, haven't had it worked on yet. Sure was annoying at the track last weekend.

Other than that I think the R is a very quite car.
Once in a while there is the sound of sucking in air coming from the passenger seat, but that's gone when the passenger leaves.

I've got the seat belt squeak and my actual seat creaks a bit. It'll be addresses at the first service.

Yup, me too. Only on the passenger side. Also I got a letter from Volvo today saying I may have loose nuts.

Re: little annoying creaks here and there? (Our R)

Yes such are Volvos. My 2000 S40 had squeaks and rattles everywhere. We also have a 850 GLT (forgot the year) which suffers from center console and glovebox rattling. I was hoping the R would escape this trend, but I guess all cars end up having little squeaks and rattles (less common in Japanese cars). I have intermittent rattling coming from the B pillar, the roofliner, somewhere from the passenger door, the shifter, and my left rear suspension squeaks a lot too. Curiously all these noises occur when it gets colder. Now that it's warmer, the car is pretty quiet. Hmm... cold weather = faster + noisier. Warm weather = slower + quieter. I wish I didn't have to choose between the two, well not that I can control the weather or anything but you know what I mean.

I've read that the B pillar noise comes from a loose clip or something which can be fixed easily. The sunroof rattle apparently is also common although I've seen both over at Volvospy, but none here. I can get rid of the passenger door rattle by opening the window, but as soon as I close it, the rattling comes back. We all know about the buzzing shifter. The squeaking suspension apparently is unique to me and no one here seems to know why it's squeaking. Apparently when it's wet or warmer, the squeaking goes away. These little noises bother me a little bit, but when the weather is nice, I open the windows and sunroof, turn up the radio and I just tell myself to shutup and drive.

My R definitely does not come close to a Lexus or a Cadillac. I sat in my mom's friend 2003 LS430 - http://********************/smile/emlove.gif http://********************/smile/emlove.gif http://********************/smile/emlove.gif. You can hear still hear a pin drop going 80mph.

I guess the general consensus is we gotta live with the little knick knacks then. No car is perfect.

Doug, are sure that letter about your loose nuts wasnt from your doctor?

No, it was from Volvo.

However, when I announced to my wife that my nuts needed to be replaced, she said "Well, I hope they are better than the old pair"

Referring to the nuts on the Volvo I'm sure.

Well, it's pretty darn quiet.
No squeaks. No rattles. No suspension noise.
I do have this little wind noise over 85 or so but that's about it.
I have owned 3 Lexus', and, yes, it's been a while since I owned one but my R is quiet enough for me. MUCH quieter than my S60 AWD

No, we had a good laugh and she enjoyed getting me back once for the many times I have joked at her expense.

I agree with JRL. Mines built pretty well also. It's not as quiet as a Lexus from an isolation perspective, but it is when it comes to squeaks and rattles. And for the record, my two Japanese Acura's (MDX and TL-S) rattled more than my R.

Re: little annoying creaks here and there? (BarryH)

I removed the roll curtain or whatever it is called from the trunk of my V70R because it makes a lot of noise.
In general when the curtain is closed there a higher risk for break in. Moslty a window is being smashed to look for valueable goods underneath.

The other "quirk" is a rattle from day one. A loose nut or maybe a piece of plastic running back and forth in the ventilation shaft under the front windshield.

Then there is the shifter buzz which only occurs between 2400-2700 RPM in 5th gear.

When driving real slow on uneven surface with the window open I can hear the stabilazer rods making a sound. When driving faster it is OK.

Every now and then one of the rear back rests can make a noise but only after they have been lowered. Opening and closing mostly solves this issue.

All other sounds are parts flying through the car..

Re: little annoying creaks here and there? (Johann)

1,300 miles with nary a rattle, thunk, clunk or buzz. This car has a January 4 build date so maybe they learned a few things by then.

With 2 of my previous 3 new Volvos even after 85,000 miles they still appeared pretty solid. Hope this one holds up as well.

Some road noise, but so what! Having the ability to wup ass on just about anything on the road makes up for that!

Re: little annoying creaks here and there? (Johann)

Johann - you know there is a Bulletin to replace the shift cables for the buzzing. One less noise to worry about.
Image
http://********************/smile/emthup.gif
The cables are vibrating in the insulated sleeve and the noise travels to the shifter. The cables are replaced (NOT AN EASY JOB!!!!!!

) It works though.

Re: little annoying creaks here and there? (mike_c70)

Bringing up an old thread but I'm getting annoyed by my car. Whenever I drive onto an incline, I can hear the car flexing and small pops here and there. Also, the comfort setting has been becoming noticeably rougher, I'm beginning to hear rattles when driving over rough roads, on top of the clunking. Good thing my mechanic is hired back to a Volvo dealership. I will have him go over it with a fine tooth comb. Also, can improper lifting of the car start all this creaking and stuff. I don't remember having all these noises before the car went in to the dealer for a software upgrade. I remember a tech bulletin on the lifting procedures.

TNN81-04-2003-07-29:

"When lifting a vehicle it is important to use the proper lifting locations and procedure as defined in VADIS. These locations are designed to support the weight of the body when lifted.

If not lifted correctly, the body can deform and in some instances create an "oil can" like popping noise when the body is flexed (i.e. when in motion)."
