Greetings. For routine work on my '03 XC70, I lift the car by the forward jacking posts on the car (near the back side of the front doors). This method, however, works to lift only one side of the car at a time. Is there a way to lift all four wheels off the ground at once on this car? I have thought of putting the front wheels on ramps and using floor jacks (lifting by the rear jacking posts) to raise the car, but I am afraid that the car would not be stable, because the rear posts are so far forward. Once the car was in the air, I would put jack stands under the reinforced, rear, hoist points (used with garage hoists) to hold the car while I'm working on it.
So, is there a way to safely lift the entire car without using a garage hoist, taking special consideration of the instability that results from lifting the car by the side (rocker panel) jacking posts?

Re: lifting a 2003 XC70 (volvomachinist)

The only safe way to do this short of installing a lift in your garage (this is not as outrageous as it sounds), would be to use four jack stands. Jack the rear, put it on stands, then go around and jack the front and put it on stands. I wouldn't crawl under any car with anything less holding it.
Disclaimer: I accept no liability for your trying even this scheme.
