I got an idea guys. How hard is it to get a stock ecu for an s60r. if we get that one. then we can have that ecu tuned and simpily just switch it out when we would liek the proformance enhanced. if this is possible it would be sweet.

Re: Lets pull a fast one on volvo? (p0cket penguins)

not going to work, each ecu has to be married to the car it goes in by volvo (via VIDA)... they keep a record of that...
Yes a new ECU has to be coded for the VIN of your vehicle ... but it can be done, just costs $$$. Buy a new ECU, get it ID'd to your car, keep it stock. Mod the other ECU ... I haven't heard anyone say that if you get a new ECU programmed for your car's VIN, that it disables the old one. They both should continue to work.
It is an expensive way to go though ...

The mod/warranty issue has been discussed at length on numerous threads (including additional ECU's). The bottom line is that if you choose to mod, it can be discovered if someone wants to search deep enough. Here's a few threads for your reading enjoyment:
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=39143
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=43777
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=38381
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=44988
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=42110

Re: Lets pull a fast one on volvo? (p0cket penguins)

I had two ECUs for my TT. Both were married to my car. One was stock, the other was chipped. APR actually replicated my ECU before they chipped it. It took a matter of minutes but they needed both the stock and blank ECU I purchased.
The only thing apparent to the dealer was that my car threw a loss of power code each time I swapped it out, which could be explained by simply disconnecting the battery. The biggest difference I see in the equation is that the TT ECU cost about $700 and the chip was about $500, whereas the Volvo ECU and chip are both more expensive...probably running close to a $2K total.
-Eric

The R's have been out for three years now so a fair amount of the mod discussion (pros and cons) has been discussed. Therefore, I would recommend searching past threads because you may find what you're looking for instead of waiting for new responses that rehash the topic.
I was only trying to show you some examples of the discussion that may be pertinent to your decisions. The bottom line is that Volvo is generally not a mod friendly company (Ford influence on warranty cost control perhaps) so you mod at your own risk. And of course, some service managers are more mod considerate than others.
