Has anybody tried these? (the LEDs, not the cheesy colored incandescent bulbs!)

They seem like a good idea - longer life, instant-on response, brighter but not hot... and I like the way they look. I've been seeing them more and more on commercial trucks, which makes me think they're probably legit. Just wanted to know if anybody has had any firsthand experience.

I haven't seen anything about those in actual use, so I have no clue if they're any good. I think someone posted to the t-bricks or badbricks mailing list a while back mentioning that he was building LED taillights for his 240. Haven't heard anything since
I was thinking about trying the 50W Halogen reverse bulbs that IPD sells, for my back up lights and turn signals after I tint my taillights. I already painted the turn signal lenses red (21W is enough for now), but I'm probably going to tint the top row of the taillights, and I'll need the extra brightness (3-4 layers of transparent black paint over 4-6 layers of red will block too much light to use the stock bulbs). I'm hoping that since turn signals aren't on steady, that they won't make too much heat. I'm not the kind of person who sits at a red light with the turn signal on anyway, so it will only be used when needed.
BTW, Jason, do you have any pictures of your 164?
This is the look I'm going for.

I like the look of those tails.
I've got the ipd halogen backup bulbs, and I love them. I can't describe how much more light they throw than the stock units.
I just took some shots of the 164 over the holiday. Once I get them out of the camera, you'll likely see them in the classifieds - I've finally decided to sell it. I'm too busy with the 240 and a new house to put any time or $ into the old girl.

I've been using LEDTRONICS products since 1997. The LED bulbs work okay but do have several issues. Color blending and even distribution of light are just a few. I spent months of R&D time working on LED retrofit kits for VW and Volvo dashes. It's difficult to get the saturation, aim, and intensity right. Anyone who has seen the inside of my 850 will be able to understand. Also, the thermal flasher used in 99% of our cars will not work with LED bulbs. You will have to resort to an electronic flasher. Also the bulb out unit in the cars may not like the low impedeance values and low current draw of the LED bulbs. The idea is nice but they will require some playing with to make it work right.
Good luck.
Prospero

If I'm stopped at a light, I'm not turning, so I turn off the signal. When the light turns green, I turn on the signal and make the turn. Is that actually a violation? I sure hope not. Besides, many people don't signal at all in a case like that where it's obvious what they're doing. I find it particuarly annoying when a bright yellow light is flashing at eye level while I'm at a light and not moving.
I found this from the state I live in:

quote:
§ 46.2-848. Signals required on backing, stopping, or turning.
Every driver who intends to back, stop, turn, or partly turn from a direct line shall first see that such movement can be made safely and, whenever the operation of any other vehicle may be affected by such movement, shall give the signals required in this article, plainly visible to the driver of such other vehicle, of his intention to make such movement.

In some cases I'll leave the signal on, like if I'm at a red light in a lane that can go straight or turn, and I'm about to turn left, and I know that I'll have to yield to oncoming traffic. That way I'll let people coming up behind me know that I'm turning, and they can move over if they wish to go straight w/o waiting for me to turn.

Usually if there's a driveway (residential) or entrance (business) that's shortly before my turn, then I'll wait until I'm even with it before signaling for my turn. That may leave me 20ft or less from my turn, so technically it could be a violation, but it's one of those situations that if I were to signal long before my turn, then people may start pulling out in front of me because they think I'm turning soon.
I'm sure I break a lot of driving laws, but if I at least use a turn signal, I doubt I'll get pulled over, let alone ticketed. My general rule is to signal before hitting the brakes to slow for the turn. There's nothing I hate more than people who slow down for no reason and then flip on the signal and turn all in one motion. That gets a long lean on the horn from me every time.

There is the law which is based on numbers and crap, then there is common sense to signal before you slow to turn but after any other street, driveways, etc. that your not using and could confuse others into thinking you just left the thing on if you pass to many turns.

Hi guys,
Well being a 'limie' (Brit) i try and practice good driving manor especially when i am in the States. The two things that get me are fourway-stops, is it me ?, and right turn on a redlight. We get our own back over here with our complicated round-abouts!
I was so nervous of driving over in Uncle Sam i made the mistake when driving from Las Vegas to drive into the Centre of LA in the rush hour when it was raining, i am now cured!!
Just my thoughts.
