It's a sad day, but also a happy one. As has been posted here previously, I'll be leaving my R behind come May 1. That said, I'm catching a flight at 6:50pm tonight from Indianapolis to Chicago and then on to Munich. My new montego blue 2009 BMW 328i sedan will be waiting for me at 9:10am Thursday March 26 at the Welt.
I'm psyched. So is my 6 year old son. I'm going to pick him up from school in about an hour, and then we'll stop home and freshen up and load up the car (S60R of course) and we're off to the new Indianapolis airport which he hasn't seen.
We arrive in Munich at 12:30pm tomorrow. My friends live 55km south in Penzberg and they are picking me up and taking me to the Welt on Thursday. It's going to be sweet.
I'll let you guys know how it goes. I think this will be the first of many OSD (or ED as the bimmer folks call it) for me. I've been planning it for many months.

Have a great flight! Make sure you post up some pics of your delivery over here on swedespeed too - even if we can't hold the '12 hour rule' over your head

I wish you and your son a safe trip - have a wonderful time! Great practical choice on your new BMW. It will be a hoot to drive, especially in Germany.

Make sure to go to Hofbrauhaus in Munich. Was there on Saturday and that place is a lot of fun. Try the Pork Knucle and Herring. Break your car in at Nurburgring. I will be there on Sunday the 29th.

Re: (S60inToronto)

Yes, Munich is very nice. You taxpayers allowed me to live there for 2 years at no expense. I am eternally grateful.
We had a small "office" of a few Navy folks in a very nice neighborhood (Bogenhausen - not all that far from BMW HQ). It was actually a three story mansion seized from the Nazis at the end of WWII. We (being Navy) also had a bar in the "office" on the third floor that we called the Crows Nest. Our Lowenbrau account was alleged to be the smallest one with a scheduled weekly delivery in Munich. Each 4th of July the Lowenbrau people were treated at our "office" to a party and on Christmas we went to their brewery for a very festive evening.
The Navy in Munich - gotta love that!
And lest I forget
Man those were the days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So what did you think? Was the Welt experience everything you expected? Did the brilliant steering and suspension compensate for the downgrade in power? Which was your favorite?
Post up your thoughts and pics once you've recovered from the jetlag!

Re: Leaving for Munich in 4 hours to get my new car (02s60t5)

Probably not much of a downgrade. Isn't the 328 good for low-6's? Probably about the same as a real-world stock R.
I've been avoiding BMW dealerships lately for fear that I'll trade the R on the spot. A 335i wagon would cinch the deal, so it's probably a good thing they don't offer one stateside.
~ T
I'm still waking up between 2-4am the last two mornings. Almost over the jet lag.
Welt was everything I expected and better. Goose bumps when I saw my car.
Yes, I think I'll take the tight steering and suspension over the higher hp/torque in my R. The car felt so right. Definitely a loss of torque was noticeable but a very competent performing engine. Smooth shifts....well, I'll post more later with pics.
I drank a lot of weis (wheat) beer....after the long days of driving. I mostly had Erdinger and one at the Airbrau restaurant in the Munich airport.
Had mostly valpolicella wine in Italy.
One more month with my R. I'll enjoy that while I'm waiting for my 328.

Erdinger:
My favorite beer all time is Erdinger Pikantus. (a Weizen Bock)
Schneider makes some very good wheat beers in Munich, too. Yum.
When I bought my SR, I seriously considered the 330xi, but the R just flat out-accellerated the Bimmer (according to the calibrated seat of my pants) on my high-speed test drive course, which included a hilly section of autobahn between Kaiserslautern and Baumholder. Back then I had a 45 minute autobahn commute, and there was a practical benefit of the extra oomph.
Was the R a better car? Maybe not, but it sure was fun, and at least at that time the 3 series was very common in our area. I had a lot of juvenile fun surprising people in my Volvo sedan.
Enjoy your new Bimmer!

Re: (PMPN8EZ)

Despite having had the Lowenbrau account, the best beer in Europe is Edleweiss - not the German one but the one by the smaller Austrian brewery Kaltenhuasen.
And before anyone else gets on the beer wagon I'll add - hey - its only my opinion.

Can't stand the looks of the 5 wagon... or the price. Hopefully, the next 5 is more of a looker.
Tryg
