I have a 2004 S60 R with 68,000 miles. It recently started leaking fluid and a Volvo dealer says it's the clutch slave cylinder which requires pulling the transmission and will cost $ 1700.

Has anyone had this problem, and does the fix and cost sound right???

Welcome to SS. Unfortunately, this problem has occurred in many thread discussions and does require the transmission to be pulled to get to the slave. The leaking fluid most likely contaminated what's left of the clutch as well so this should replaced while they're in there. Is this included in the $1700 estimate?

I assume the 1700 includes a new clutch?
You must put a clutch in as it's now contaminated with fluid

No. the cost was just to replace the slave cylinder.

Find an good indie mechanic. The money you'll save in labor will pay for the clutch.

Thanks for the advice. I've started looking around and can get the job done for about $ 1500 with the clutch kit.

I replaced mine by myself and my Clutch was NOT contaminated so it just depends on if your lucky or not.

With 68k miles of easy driving, its still a good and reasonable idea to put in a clutch.

Its only a few hundred bucks, and while you have all that crap out of the way.

The clutch doesn't always get contaminated but with the mileage you have it may be a safe thing to do while in there.

I would go a step further and recommend that anyone who's pulling the transmission to do the clutch (or anything else) should do the slave cylinder too. The additional cost is negligible and could save you from spending the $1700 again in the near future.

I think when you get a clutch for our car its hard to do by yourself. Something about preloading one of the clutches on the twin disk?

I took my R to an independent repair shop to get the slave cylinder and clutch changed and they gave up on the repair cause they couldn't separate the transmission from the engine. They were concerned that prying on it would break the case. What's up, any ideas? I wondered if the front transmission shaft is stuck on the clutch disk.

If your clutch was working, than the disc is not stuck on the input shaft. Pilot bearing could be snug, but pulling out straight will get it.

Are they sure they have removed all the bell housing bolts?

They have a single disc clutch.

Just had mine done under extended warranty at an indie. Payed for the clutch on top as well as replacing the rear main seal and the seals on the tranny since I was told its the tranny seal going bad that causes them to fail. I have a six speed, not sure about the autos. the labor on pulling the trans would have cost about 900.

While a leaking rear main seal, or transmission front seal would indeed contaminate the clutch, I do not recall one reported incident of this.

The common failure mode is for the slave cylinder to leak, and contaminate the disc. I hope this was replaced at the time they did the work. Certainly would not hurt to replace the above mentioned seals while in there.

It just makes sense to do it when you have already paid for the labor to replace the clutch

This is sort of like changing out your water pump when replacing the timing belt IMHO.
