The HU-850 has been criticized for the lack of bass. Try turning off the surround sound first.

An amp/sub can be run off the line level output of the HU or off the speaker wiring. There is a seller on eBay who makes the line out cables for $25.
Incidentally, Ive got a 12" Boston competition sub in an OEM Boston enclosure, and an Alpine 220 amp, I was about to list for sale. Let me know if you're interested (although the shippiung rate from Canada might be brutal due to the weight)

With my iPod/SiriusXM radio/laptop it sounds like there could easily be a subwoofer mounted somewhere, and I'm able to turn the bass up quite high on my laptop before the speakers distort.
The FM radio and CD player built into the unit seem to purposely have a low volume level (probably not to overheat the amp or blow the speakers?).
