They warned me of this when they handed over the keys to my V70. Scary. Even if I could, I don't think I'd use these for opening packages...
- Darell

Nothing like those chip embedded keys to give one sticker shock! I think next time around, I may try to negotiate an extra spare key into the price of the car.
FWIW, Nissan and Infiniti has a similar immobilizer system and the keys run about $100 as well.
-ema

Well, you should see Mercedes owners cry when they lose their infrared key. I know of one guy who lost one for his CLK, and at first the dealer told them that they would have to replace the whole key system in his car, at the cost of thousands of dollars. Finally, they told him he could get a new one, but it still cost him around $400 big ones. Crazy huh?
-Drew

My dad works at a Ford dealership and deals with this all the time. They recommend that an owner get at least 3 keys because if you lose one, a replacement can be "added" without having to start over by reprogramming the entire system (more $$$). So if you lose a key and still have at least 2, I think it's about $125 to replace a key (part+labor). If you start with 2 and lose one, then that one key becomes useless when you have to reprogram 3 new keys.
Yet another reason for me to like my 240. I bought it with one key, but had two copies made for next to nothing. They're just plain flat metal keys, so I can keep one in my wallet. Try that with a new-car key!

OK, I gotta be fair here but more ridiculous news....I asked they for the price of the remote and holy sh*t, it's gonna cost me like $140 bucks to get the remote and get it programmed. Are they for real?????? Volvo owners, please, someone tell me this isn't so. That's like almost $300 bucks to get a key and a remote!
I know its all for security and all but honestly, NO ONE steals Volvos right? MB, BMW, Americans' or Japanese...ok...but Volvo's???
dialogue to dealer... "No, I can't take the sunroof option because if I do, I cannot afford and extra key and remote for my car!!!"

One of the best places to find "extra" remotes is on Ebay. All you have to do is make sure it is the right remote for your car, and you should have no problem having it programmed by the dealer. There are a lot of people who get them this way.
-Drew

I have 2 brand-new remotes from a 2001 40-series. I don't know if they will work on your system or not. If they do, I let them go for $100 total.
Prospero
