Key Fob Programming

Anybody have any luck getting fob (re)programmed anywhere other than a dealer? I've called a couple of local lock shops, but no luck so far.

Failing that, any thoughts on which dealer in the greater NYC/North Jersey area might be cheapest and easiest to deal with for this?

I just picked up an '08 V70. Previous owner had only one fob, which works fine and has the metal key included. But I'd like to get at least one other fob programmed for peace of mind if nothing else.

I'm much less concerned about having a second physical key cut -- but with an extra fob, the key that I have can stay home.

Related question: Can secondhand fobs that came from other cars be *re*programmed, or do I need to start with a virgin device?

THANKS

Yup, you need to go to a dealer to do this, or have a shop that has the proper Volvo software for it.
It will not be cheap either way, and it’s usually one standard price - one of my Indy’s biggest pet peeves is people complaining about the price for key fob reprogramming, them leaving to try out a cheaper alternative they found on the internet or on Craigslist, wasting a week or two trying scams (most of the time losing a lot of money in the pursuit of a better deal), and then coming back anyways (because nothing else worked, obviously) and paying full price in the end.
All of which would’ve been avoided if they had just sucked up the cost and done it properly at the dealer/trusted shop.
Not sure about using a secondhand fobs- will have to do some research.

Anyone with a VIDA subscription and a DICE unit can program a NEW remote. Some large independent Volvo specialists have a subscription and can program your car to accept a NEW remote for you. I had a subscription for my shops when I needed it and programmed many modules, keys. remotes, etc. The cost through me of the module replacement or key or remote would be about the same as the dealer because of the subscription charge. To lower that price I would try to schedule several cars that needed downloads at once so I could split the subscription charge between customers.

As far as I know - you cannot program a used remote to a different car. Perhaps if you had the original bag the remote came with. To make a remote work you need the package the remote comes in - the plastic bag. It has a code on it and the "download" actually tells the car to accept the signal from that remote - you don't program the remote to talk to the car.

as previously stated, the key id gets programmed to the car. the key id is on the package the key comes in, without it, the key is a paperweight. you could program they key to your car if you had dice and a vida subscription, but it would be less expensive to pay the hour of labor and software charge most dealers charge. if you think theres a chance you may lose a key, programming multiple fobs at once will save multiple labor and software charges at most shops.

Need the fob codes to program fobs new or used. One software load will do one or as many fobs slots that are available. No extra software cost. Better to do two keys at a time for cost. GlĂĽck.

We ended up calling our insurance company for lost key and they paid for two more, minus the deductible.
