Well... I got the dreaded "Key Error" that has been mentioned on this forum before.
I was leaving work at about 4pm on Friday - I put the key in the ignition and realized I did not here the typical sound that the key makes when inserted. When I turned the key, nothing - just the Dreaded "Key Error" - "Try Again" message. I thought maybe my other key might work so I had my wife meet me at work and bring the other key. No luck on that, same error. I called the dealership to see if they could suggest something. They had me unlock and lock the car a few times. No luck on that either.
Now, on top of all of the above, my windows were stuck down and it was supposed to storm all weekend. ( why the sunroof will work with the key in the ignition but not the windows is beyond me!)
I called Volvo roadside assistance and they sent the tow truck. With the dealership closed at 6pm I had no way to get the car inside. Once the car was at the dealer (8:30pm), I rushed to my in-laws house up the street to borrow a tarp to put over the car. so the interior would not get soaked over the weekend.
Next fun piece of info - the dealer calls me this morning to tell me that the steering wheel is locked so not only do they have to replace the ignition module - they have to replace the entire steering column because once the in car network goes down, there is no way to unlock it and get the ignition module out.
Anyway, this seems like a glaring set of flaws for this car. I'm not sure I'm ever going to trust it again completely. If I get stuck like this again, I'm getting out of the lease for sure.
Anyone else have an issue like this??

Re: Key Error Adventures.... (sag40)

I stopped at the post office one day to mail a letter. Went in, came out put my key in the ignition, turned it and nothing. The car had been off for all of 10 minutes. I turned it off and on again and my tiny screen told me there was a failure of something I can't remember the exact name of the part at the moment. So i called and had it towed to the dealership. The towing guy had a hell of a time because the steering wheel was locked. The dealership also had a hell of a time getting it into the bay because the steering wheel was locked. They actually had to rent a tow truck to get it towed into the bay. Why they couldn't have the same person from the Volvo roadside assistance that towed it to the dealership, tow it into the shop I have no idea.
After looking at it the dealership said it would take all of a day to fix. A week passes and they call and say it's ready for pick up. I go to pick it up and they tell me they had to replace the ignition module and whole steering column. Luckily it was all covered under warranty. Sounds like the same problem.

What causes these failures? Sounds like some communication failure from the ECU?

Re: (quick)

I have no idea what the root cause is...
Some people claim they have had this issue and it corrects itself after a few tries at turning the key or locking and unlocking the doors.
A few messages I read on this board said that the dealer had re-flashed the CEM to fix the issue.
Whatever the cause, a 1 and 1/2 year old car should not exhibit this kind of problem - and it should not be this difficult to remedy. Thank god I'm still in the warranty period - I'd hate to find out what the steering column replacement costs!

Re: (sag40)

I did have similar type of failure but in my case, only the motor operated steering lock was broken. AFAIK, my dealer managed to replace the lock without replacing the whole steering column but it took some time because the steering was locked.
I did not see any key failures but a steering failure instead. Of course, the steering does not work if it is locked...
Seems that the steering lock+immobilizer+key combination is another weak spot in our cars besides the radio software. Odd that in the case of key error etc. they can not override the steering lock. There should be a way to do that even if the CEM is dead but only with right tools of course.

With the key in position 0, neither windows nor sunroof work. Position 1 or 2, both the windows and sunroof work. At least that's how it is for me.

The sunnyside to this is that the car is at Stillman Volvo and they have always taken very good care of me. I expect this will be fixed ASAP.
See if they end up replacing the same part they did for me, here in my thread:
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=53534
There is also listed the error code they pulled from the car's computer.
My windows and sunroof were all closed, and I didn't try to operate them, sorry.
-Chris
