So this mustard colored Jetta rolls up next to me and the guy says "let's roll!" We were at a stop light and the speed limit was 70 from there on out. He seemed like a decent kid so I agreed. Before we started we both agreed to ONLY take it to the speed limit and then pull in to a gas station up the road to chat. There were NO cars on this road, in front or behind us. 10pm here in my city gets pretty quiet. I have a GT so I let the R's get to 2500 briefly before launch. And off we went. By the time we hit 60 he was 2 cars in front of me and we shut them down. Pulled into the lot off of the highway and chatted awhile. Turns out he "supposedly" is the only one in the country right now with an R32 swap in a 1991 VW jetta. The car was amazingly fast and this thing had evey mod that he could have on it! Tony was the owner. Turns out we live 3 blocks from one another. One look at this car and you would think oh.......exhaust, chip and turbo (maybe). This R32 engine was second to NONE that I have ever seen in person before. Bigger turbo, intercooler, nos, adjustable suspesion, roll cage (it was dark and I did not see that prior to agreeing to "roll" with him) custom paint, hood vents etc. I guess one can never tell what a guy has under the hood. He said that his car does run mid to high 4's 0-60 and a little over 12 in the quarter. After our get together he let me drive his car while he followed me in mine. The M3 I drove a few weeks ago does not compare to the torque that this car had. And it had this MONSTER torque at any speed I was at. We drove for 15 min and then swapped. He loved my car and I lusted his (the looks just are not for me) The R32 engine was what amazed me the most. Anyways just thought I would write about my first arse whoopen publicly. We swapped #'s and are going to a Euro get together next weekend . That my friend is where I will be doing some poking and prodding to find out whats up with this R32 engine. I am familiar withe the R32 but not famaliar with one that seems like God built it himself. Have a great day guys, and thanks for reading.

very interesting - there have been plenty VR6 swaps into the Mk2 Jetta (1985 through 1992) and probably some 24v VR6s into a Mk2 but its interesting to hear that the R32 motor has also made its way. I'll have to search on VWVortex.com for more info on this car.

When I was narrowing my search for my "grown up" Car it came down to the R32 GTI AND THE S60R...(chose the S60R because of 2 extra doors and no one knows about them) HPA does some amazing work on R32 and Audi TTs with twin turbos putting out 500+ horses in a very streetable package...that almost swayed me away from the R...(like JRL said always some one faster)

First of all...
The stock R32 engine is a narrow angle V6 with no turbo or supercharger that delivers around 250hp at sea level at optimal air pressure and temperature with good gas. The R32 itself uses an AWD Haldex system.
So... whatever you drove, it had not much to do with a R32 engine... maybe it was one to start with... who knows...
Regards,
Coolknight

I can only imagine what a turbo and nitrous bring to the party there.

A true sleeper. I can't hate on him though. That R32 is a killer. I'll keep my eyes peeled for and my "6spd" in 4th.

that R32 will rival an R (stock for stock) on any track. I have a jetta with a 1.8 liter turbo engine... By the end of the weekend it will hand most R's its you know what... and for TONS LESS $$$ than I have wrapped up in my R... It's a fun car and weighs in at 2800 lbs with me in it when I weighed it.

Re: (R_Rated)

Yep, the weight factor was HUGE! He said that he weighed in at the track with him in the car @ 2125 lbs. I think that with me weighing in at 185 lbs and ouR caRs at close to 3800 (I think) that's about a 1800 lbs weight difference. Power to weight is the most important factor. And by the way, I was totally ok with him handing it to me. In fact I was honored to even keep up with him at times (low end). And to boot he was a class act!

for 4K I can take my jetta from the stock 180 hp to 350... no way can you get that power gain for the money in an R, lol.

I would not want to lose like that, lol.

Re: Just got smoked by a 1991 VW Jetta!!!!!!!! (flybynight)

When I was stationed in upstate New York, I met a guy with an R32. He had smoked a few 350Zs, so he though his car was faster than mine, and he was a little arrogant. Before I had a chance to race him, I had gone to the quarter mile track with a few of his buddies. Based on their reports of my car's performance, he refused to race me after that. (I don't know why some folks are soooo afraid to lose... losing is much more fun than winning, unless it's for money, but whatever) Anyway... that guy got deployed, and I didn't see him for like 6 months...
One day, I'm driving around and I see what looks like a GTI with a fat a$$ intercooler in the front end pulling out of a parking lot onto the same road as me in the same direction... I notice the R32 wheels, and thought "Eh, must be the special edition six-speed GTI... then I saw the dude, and saw the little Haldex badge he always had on the side of his car (he had upgraded his AWD system somehow, but I don't know the specifics). He yelled out the window at me "You wanna race me now???" then he downshifted and took off, and I sat in my own pee for a minute... then followed him to a lot where he popped the hood, and I emptied the remaining contents of my bladder right there.
By the way...
http://www.motortrend.com/feat...n_r32/
you can buy these ^ for around 60K now, and smoke an Enzo! And it's not tubbed out either, it has A/C and runs on pump gas. R32 is a nice platform for mods if you wanna spend some dough. And they are really something at the track.

My 86 VW Racecar which is pretty well gutted and only has a 8V 4-cyl hits the track at 2280 min legal weight
That's car + me (~188 with gear) + a little gas + a little ballast.
Even without the rollcage, I'd likely not be much less than 2125 so can't see how he did that.
