Just finished full trim blackout on new-to-us '16 Bursting Blue R-Design

My wife is like me and hates chrome/bright trimwork as much as I do. So when we found her a low mileage 2016 we immediately went to black out all the eyesore silver trim (we dont understand why even in 2020 Volvo does not offer black trim as on the XC40).

Anyway, here is the result if anyone is curious how it looks. She loves it.

Thanks all! Currently still learning all the features of the car. Pretty impressed so far, even if its an automatic ;) (our first slushbox in over 10 years).

Just had the Android auto update performed free of charge and really impressed with its integration. Dealer is currently running a special on Polestar software and PA2 upgrade so trying to convince the wife that would be a nice Christmas upgrade.

Anyone know how to swap the reverse light bulbs, or even what the bulbs themselves are? I am a lighting geek and it really bothers me the entire car is LED except for those, but I don't see any way of accessing them minus removing the whole tail lamp assembly which looks like a pretty big job.

Haha good catch! This is our first Volvo after years of Audi, Subaru, and Porsche, now I've got to learn a whole new color palate name set

What did you use?
This was all done with vinyl wrap with a 9H ceramic coating on top. In retrospect I probably would have just bought a set of OEM black mirror caps vs wrapping them.

OP - sorry to dig up an old thread but I was wondering how hard the process was for removing the external trim?

My car has a small ding on the trim around the rear window and I was considering replacing it but was concerned it might become a bigger problem trying to fix it than it's worth.

Hi MaxC, I did this same thing on my 2018 R-Design... in my case we did not have to remove the window trim. The vinyl could be applied with the window trim still on the car. That may be the case for the OP as well.

We had all the window trim, grille, roof rails, and mirrors, wrapped while still on the car. Now that Volvo offers these parts in gloss black from the factory, I intend to price it out and look into the difficulty in removing them myself.

I can say grille removal will require bumper removal, as when I installed the Polestar grille badge, I was able to get to the aft side of the grille by removing some of the sub assembly and pulling it out enough to get access...but full removal would not be possible with the bumper in place.

That does look great. Any reason why you'd switch to the oem back parts? Not happy with how the vinyl came out? Did you DIY? Difficult?

FYI: Grille comes off without bumper removal. Few of us have done it..but two screws make it a real PITA. Not hard though. Just painfully inefficient.

Since this thread has been revived..

I am considering doing a full chrome delete on my Bright Silver XC90 — Including the rear emblems and exhaust tips. Wondering if you had considered that too?

Also, the chrome frame around the grille looks difficult to wrap — where to start/stop the vinyl. I was considering using Gloss Black Hyperdip and just spray it in place. Thoughts?

Great looking car btw!

Hi ChrisFu
I love what you've done, it looks great, stunning actually. Is there a reason you didn't black out all the rear lettering? I think it would have looked much better with this black as well (leave the R ans P* as they are though)... Be worth trying with PlastiDip or similar and seeing what you think, it could always be removed if you don't think it looks any good. Just my thoughts.

I never had any luck with the plastidip. I tried 6+ layers with 30 minutes between layers on emblems and License plate covers and they all start to peel and crack and looks ****ty within a few months. But take that with a grain of salt a I didn't use the glossify either.

No, I recall its most of the upper and forward facing area and then the bottom with the seam along the lower wraparound edge. In the end its not very noticeable the way it was done.
