Ok, I'm getting pretty excited here. I'm one day away from three days of kayaking on Lake Tahoe, and I've just loaded up my sqeaky-clean T5 with my dual tow eye tie-downs, my customized (two feet wider with Yakima round bars) factory roof rack, and enough Mako saddles for two kayaks (and multi-mounts for the paddles). Probably when I get back I'll actually have some interesting pictures. But for now you're stuck with this. (Kinda looks like it wants to fly with its little wings, huh?)

- Darell

Coastal -
You're a dirty boy!
Man, every time I see a picture of your car, it's in some beautiful, exotic-looking location. You a)live in a beautiful place, and b) get around.
- Darell

Thanks Darell,
Me thinks it's a bit of both a and b.
Here's a better pic, more representative of the beauty of this particular location...
It's called Paradise Valley, part way between Whistler and Squamish. The drive to reach this place truly demostrates the abilities of the XC.. 45 min drive along a windy seaside road, then 15 mins on a straight country road, about 25 minutes of fire road bombing (can't remember how long exactly since I was having so much fun ), then 5 minutes off road brought us here...

Next week.. my favorite... Pacific Rim National park.. heh.
Have a great time on yer trip, looking forward to seeing yer pics... Tahoe is awesome!

Coastal,
Those are some beautiful pictures! It is nice see the XC being put through the paces, ya know? The dirt makes it look mean and rugged.
Darell,
Your car looks like an angel with wings now. The big question is, what do you put in that little garage, I bet you could fit a Mini in there.
-Drew

Hey! How come Coastal is getting so much airtime on MY thread?! I mean...this is supposed to be all about ME!
Oh well, I guess I can share.
Drew - funny you should mention my garage. Would you hate me if I told you I was cramped in there? Two cars in the double side, and my shop is the single bay. Plus, all the normal crap: camping gear, Yakima racks, motorcycle gear (notice no motorcycle though), wood-working tools everywhere, beer bottle collection, etc. I am SERIOUSLY pressed for space. NOBODY makes a big enough garage for me. I need a barn too. I mean, how am I supposed to fit my new kayak in here?
BTW, you may notice that I tinted all of my little garage windows. I needed the doors to match the V70 better
- Darell

Coastal -
That's OK. You're welcome to crash my threads any day....
I know what you mean about the long bars. I had six-footers on my mini pickup, and I'd whack myself all the time. These stick out to about the widest part of the car, so you actually have to work at it a bit to put an eye out. However, I think I'll pick up another "stock" set of racks for normal stuff. I only need these extendo jobs for when I need to carry two kayaks or a kayak and my Rocket Box. If I just take the rocket box alone (like normal), these racks will probably be a lot noisier than I want, since they stick out so far.

OK, I'm back and alive. What FUN.
Here's the V70 just arriving at the Emerald Bay Campground.

and parked at the campsite

and of course, the whole reason we went:

The dual tow-eye deal worked so well I couldn't believe it. The kayak rental place thought I'd modified my bumpers for the eye bolts. He wasn't as impressed with the hours I'd spent modifying my racks, but what the heck. Might as well impress people with stuff I didn't do...
- Darell
[This message has been edited by darell (edited 07-06-2001).]

Nice pics Darell!
Looks like you've got quite the load in "yak3.jpg"!
Another thing.. did you lengthen/polish your exhaust tip? Mine's tucked up so far underneath the bumper I can barely see it. (Yes, a setup of sorts).
I've got some pics from my recent outing, but I'll post em in another thread just to keep things friendly... j/k

Thanks Coastal -
I polished the exhaust tip, but other than that, it's standard.
Yes, the side-view of the car at the camp site shows it loaded to the gills. Free lowering, ya know? Of course you can't see all the crap in the back because of the slick tinting. Actually, that particular shot reminds me of the very fist picture you posted of your car with some magnificent rock cliff in the background.
Ah what fun! I was just sitting here day-dreaming about the trip. I wanna go back. The temp varied from a chilly 70 to a blistering 85. Day and night, it was perfect.
- Darell

Yeah, I have that pic, but the beauty of yours is there's no houses in the background!
Sounds like a great place to visit. What's the weather there like in September?
We're going on an extenda-road-trip throughout the Western States (mainly the coast), and am interested in adding Tahoe to the itinerary. I was there once as a kid in the middle of the summer and what sticks in my mind was a freak snow storm that occurred one night!
September is about the same temps as now. The summer average is about 80. It's usually much cooler at night than what we experienced (but usually not below 55 or so. Surprisingly, there was NO snow. Usually there is plenty on the peaks in July still. But we had a drought, which is supposed to make our power situation even worse.
- Darell

Yes, I realize nobody asked for more pictures, but here's another anyway. This was taken from our camp site, believe it or not. That is Emerald Bay where the kayaking shot was taken. We had to hike the boats down and back up a trail, but it was worth the effort.

And if you want to see this image full-size in all of it's glory, click here (I accidentally uploaded it full-size first). www.darelldd.com/misc/campviewbig.jpg
- Darell

ICONCLS, beautiful car you have there, it's very similar to the one that turned me onto Volvos in the first place.
What rigs have you got up there on the roof?

Cool!
I didn't know anybody else even knew that word. (I'll bet we'll be sending plenty of folks diving for their dictionaries, huh?)
The word describes me quite well too, so we must be brothers in Volvo.

regards,
- Darell

C:
Rig is 100% Yakima I have a long standing bias for Yakima--those cross bars you see up there are 20 years old
