I cannot believe how there are so many negative post's regarding reliability issues with Volvo cars . Are you sure that Volvo's sold in North America are from the same factory as those exported elsewhere? Maybe your cars are built somewhere else!
I have owned 5 Volvo's and have never had a single warranty issue yet, and I am fairly confident that our driving conditions here in Australia are just as bad if not worse than those in the good old USA!

Re: Just a theory........... (James748S)

Second theory:
I believe that we are just spending time to find solutions to our problems with Volvo´s. Probably our expectations on performance, reliability and confidence on this brand is higher related to other brands, which in many cases are cheaper and... probably better in terms of trouble-free life of the car.
I wouldn´t use time to talk or to read about the outstanding performance or safety issues because everybody assumes that is what we are paying for.
If you, as I do nearly every day, read the subjects of this and other forums, will realize that are mostly the same four or five big issues: transmission, motor and suspension mounts, throttle module, electrical erratic issues and not much more. What upset us is that most of them are either bad designed elements or not well diagnosed and/or solved problems by the Volvo network
Please don´t missunderstand me, but If someone uses Volvo´s to take children school and on the way back shopping in the supermarket, the car is trouble free. If you are not a carefull driver, the V70 is not as strong as the 200, 700 or 800 series.

or.......Americans like to bitch about their problems with their cars on the internet more than anyone else?
Remember, the people you see on this and any other brand message board replresent a tiny fraction of the total ownership of that brand. As those brands get more expensive, the owners tend to be more picky about issues with their cars.

You must remember that people come to these boards generally seeking answers to problems. Also - if you are coming here to look for resolution to a problem you are having, it means that you are more of a self-motivated person and not one to simply drop it off at the dealer. Thus - posts on these forums appear to make the cars look "troublesome".
Very few come here to say "hey! my V70 totally kicks ass and has had zero problems"
Also, the new Volvo owners appear to have been taken-in by the safety and reliability mystique of the cars, and are shocked when they do break down. Often, these folks come here to post in a panic and in ALL CAPS because they are the only ones who have ever had this problem with their Volvo. Well, a car is a machine and any and every machine ever made will break. This is a certainty. Failure to maintain the car and poor driving habits will make the reliability plummet.
Oh, and by the way:
Hey! My '01 V70 T5 totally kicks ass and has had a few issues, but well - STILL KICKS ASS!

Well, at 10,000 miles, I had a bad power seat switch. That was it. I am at 78,500 miles and the car has been just awesome. Despite the extra stuff I have done to it (look at my signature). I just got a "position light failure"...nothing big.
Front rotors were the originals until 75,000! Rear rotors are still oroginal. Rear pads were changed a couple of thousand miles ago!!! I could have left them but I wanted to change them since I was moving.
I drove the car, a few weeks ago, from Pennsylvania to San Diego, CA and the car was just amazing! Drove through some very tough (temperaturewise) places, through the hills of CO, through the endless straights of MO and KS...no problems. And all that loaded up with my family, three suitcases, two file boxes, etc.
Yannis

Re: Just a theory........... (GrecianVolvo)

I am glad you agree, there seemed to me to be way too much negative feedback on this site. We don't muck around with our car either, a fair portion of our mileage is on some dodgy dirt roads. Our friends who have a Mitsubishi Pajero are quite amazed that we have been able to go everywhere they have, but in more comfort and using less fuel!

Must be the Volvo's performance that shrank those mountains. BTW, Where's the pix? And welcome to Sunny SoCal! You'll have to visit the "hills" at Big Bear & Arrowhead.
I also have a 2001 V70 T5 with 80,000 miles on it and it too KICKS ASS! Other than that gol-danged ETM, no major issues. I love this car! And, as has been said, I, like most people, came to SS looking for maintenance and minor repair tips. I never posted comments about how trouble free the car was or the comfortable seats or the styling. You can find those sorts of comments if you look.

Re: Just a theory........... (MineMapper)

In the last 7 years I've owned 3 volvo's. With all 3 I've had to put gas in them and change normal wearing parts out. That's it. No car is perfect. My family and I happen to think Volvo is pretty close. We're very happy with our cars
