I know this maybe doesn't belong here but, Jim Lill is in his first offical race today at Watkins Glen in his ITB class VW race car. We talked for a while yesterday and he had said that all practice and qualifing was done in the heavy rain. As Jim is a real friend to most of us here at the R forum, I thought I'd let everyone know and congratulate him on doing what most of only dream of. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif Good luck Jim.
Go Jim! Let us all know how you did! http://********************/smile/emthup.gif
Yes, and lots of pictures please. That VW machine is looking very sharp. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif http://********************/smile/emcocktl.gif
The pix album will take a bit to sort out. My friend who took the pix had never shot such action stuff before, never been to a race, and was also my only crew!!
I have been working since May to fix a few things on the car I didn't like and to get a few SCCA Tech requirements met. I finished on Friday morning and left for the track still needing my Annual Tech inspection.
I arrived at WGI at 2:30 PM to find that no entrance until 5PM as the Test/Tune was going on and for some reason they wouldn't allow the race entrants in. We left and went to the cottage then came back and stood in a line of 100+ "early" arrivers.
I finally got in at 5:45 and unloaded etc. and next was the tech line. Some delays there and I finally cleared tech at 7:30 PM, passing with no issues, a worry I had.
Saturday was ALL RAIN, the area got as much as 2 inches. It never really stopped all day. I had trailered the car in on DOT slicks, but switched to Toyo RA-1 for the rain.
There were 2 12 minutes sessions of practice/qualifying. Some of it was like driving on ice, a lot of hydroplaning etc. I managed a 3:09, 38/57 for the Group 3 cars, a mixture of classes.
Sunday weather was perfect, so back to slicks. My only goal was to learn and finish. Racing is unlike track days, with fast guys passing everywhere etc. So with that goal, and a car I'm told is slightly down on power, I finished 14/16 in ITB Class.

Must have been some BAD weather...you were pushing 2:30 on a damp track back in May when I timed you. Great job keeping it on the black! http://********************/smile/emthup.gif
We're looking forward to seeing the pics and hearing more!
Good show, Jim. I spot no less than 4 of the early 142's in that ITB start, and I note that a 142 holds the SCCA ITB Watkins Glen track record at 2:24.423 from last year (e.g.). So, you can't escape the Volvo Iron!

The 142 is THE car to run in ITB. But, it is (surprise) a high maintenance racer.
