So i went to change my oil and oil filter at Jiffy Lube since i was too lazy today to do it myself. After they finished their work the mechanic pulls me aside to tell me that my oil filter has never been changed and im at 45,000 miles. This made me upset just because i feel i cant trust the dealership with my cars service needs that i pay a lot for. Just a heads up to all of you.

And he could tell this because?

I would trust my Volvo dealer long before anyone at Jiffy Lube.....not that I would ever consider using Jiffy Lube to begin with.

What are you talking about? If your oil filter was never changed prior to 45K miles, then your engine would have died a long time ago.

Also, how would the guy know that it wasn't changed?

And lastly, change the oil yourself if you want to save some money. It is really easy and takes less than an hour to complete. And stay away from Jiffy Lube!! I have heard horror stories.

Wow, all three of us posted basically the same thing at the exact same time.

I went o Jiffy Lube one time and they couldn't even remove the filter...dont trust them.... Buy your own oil and take it to the dealer.

lol. Yea, if monkey lube is better than your dealer, then you got problems. My roomate used to work there, and he would tell some funny stories about that place.

C'Mon - share a few! PLese involve a Vovlo somehow....

I have a VW Beetle story--I owned an air-cooled Beetle about 15+ years ago (there were still a fair number on the road, especially in that part of the country) and did almost all my own work, including oil changes. For some reason that escapes me, I brought it in to Jiffy Lube for an oil change...and the poor guy couldn't find the engine. After a few minutes of him looking in the front luggage compartment, with sheer bewilderment on his face, I couldn't stand it anymore and walked over and showed him the engine in the rear. It was priceless.

No, the engine is actually in front, I bet you got a soup-up Beetle with a Carrera engine in it. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Re: Jiffy Lube (kenschel)

Okay I've got a story about monkey lube. My coworker took his 2003 Infinity in the day he bought it for an oil change and fluid top off. Well the Monkey Lube Tech "accidently" filled the brake resivor with motor oil. Mucked up his entire brake system after 100 miles of driving.

Monkey Lube initially denied the claim becasue it was too difficult to determine "fault". However, after a threat of a lawyer and a lot of bitching with the regional rep Monkey Lube paid up.

That's the type of shizzel you have to deal with at your local Monkey Lube.

Volvo techs have their moments too, but generally Volvo tech have secondary education. If that makes you feel any safer...

Now you finish

But seriously, please elaborate

And couldn't belive the warm sensation.... He was trilled how easily the fluid poured out.

Jiffy lube only employs high school graduates with minimum 2.0 GPA http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Re: (Copeland)

A few girls worked at his Jiffy Lube, and they didn't know jack. One of the stories was that one of them poured engine oil into somewhere it didn't belong. I don't remember if it was the windshield wiper fluid reserve, or something worse like brake fluid, but she kept her mouth shut and pretended like it didn't happen
Image
. Another time, they didn't tighten the oil filter correctly, and when they started the car, oil started shooting out of the front wheels on both sides. I actually witnessed this. I laughed so hard I cried.
Image
Then there were the usual things like accidentally using the wrong oil, not changing filters cause they were lazy, selling naive people unneccesary hardware, etc. The sad thing is, my roomate actually got fired from there!!!!

Re: (jdog)

He probably thought it had never been changed because the outside of the filter was so dirty.....I would seriously get under the car and check that you still have a cannister filter and not a spin on kind jacked on somehow. Seriously.

Here is a picture if you've never been under there.

Re: (jdog)

There was a bad Jiffy Lube scam awhile ago in the San Fernando Valley in CA. A news station took a car to several Jiffy Lube stations and marked several parts in the car they wanted to be replaced. They never got replaced. Also video cameras were put in the car. Sometimes, the mechanics didn't even do anything but still charged. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR TO JIFFY LUBE.

That's exactly what I was thinking and going to say. To elaborate a little in case anyone has not experienced this setup before (I hadn't): the black canister is reused and the old filter element is simply replaced on the inside with a new one. So yes, the black part should have been the original, but certainly the actual internal filter was not. I'd put money on the fact that you no longer have the original Volvo oil filter canister under there.
Image
I'd go back ASAP and see if they will pay for you to replace the POS they put up there with the original Volvo one...actually, I would DEMAND it!
Good luck.

Re: (adalcanto)

I want to know the outcome of this one. I bet you guys are right, they somehow replaced the canister with a one piece filter. I wouldn't even run the engine till you know for sure.
You bought the R for many reasons, one must of been the quality. Don't skimp out now when it comes to oil changes. Either do it your self or use the dealer.
The only time I go to a quick change oil place is to recycle my used oil.

Re: Jiffy Lube (aphxtwinin)

This is why I do my own oil changes or have my local Volvo dealer do it. This is a news story investigation done on Jiffy Lube with hidden cameras. I can not believe you took your R to these grease monkeys. I would never trust or believe these slime suckers on what they have to say. Well your car, not mine. Here is the story!

P.S. You of gotten suckered! Can I sell you the Golden Gate Bridge? I will sell to you for a good price! LOL

I just happen to have some pictures of my last oil change.

Very easy to do if you have a lift - which conveniently the dealer does. See, I'm not selfish, I believe in supporting the economy by paying someone else to do it.

The last time my friend took his car to Jiffy Lube (mazda millennia) they put his drain plug back on with the impact gun....the good/bad thing was...bad- it stripped the hole out and he needed a new oil pan.....good- when it stripped, it would just sit there and spin, but no oil would leak out, so atleast the car was driveable.

Probably not actually. I knew a lady who in 80,000 miles NEVER even changed the oil, needless to say the filter, in her Maxima. It ran like a champ.
Of course, that was stupid, and if the oil filter had not been changed in 45,000 miles that would be stupid as well.
I doubt the Jiffy Lub guy knew what he was talking about.

I have seen it all now.
If I would of had to guess who would take pictures of his oil change, I would of picked you Kelly.
