Well, our first roadtrip, with the car at just 1500 miles, and on day one (last Thu) - driving to our destination - I got a chip in the windshield!
This morning, loading up the car for the drive home, I looked at it again (tried to avoid looking at it / thinking about it, not wanting to ruin my vacation ) - and it had propagated in both directions, nearly spanning the front windshield, from mid-passenger-wiper to about 3 inches from the drivers edge of the window.
I wasn't tailgating / following too closely! In fact, I'm 99% sure the rock came from oncoming traffic. Two lane, windy mountain roads, and a large flatbed towtruck going at high speed in the opposite direction. Heard the loud CRACK, but couldn't see anything from inside. Not until we stopped for lunch 90 minutes later did I see it.
You can see in the pic it's REALLY down low - amazing it didn't hit the hood, but it must have been coming in at a high trajectory!?
http://www.compassimages.com/p...8.jpg
(ignition key resting on driver's wiper for scale...)
So, has anyone had the windshield replaced on their new S40/V50? Under warranty? Or do I have to use my insurance?
As bad as the initial chip made me feel, I was already thinking that I could get it filled. But then it propagated after the fact. Crappy glass? I've driven easily 300-400k miles in my lifetime, and never had a chip propagate to a crack like this. Now, just 2000 miles into my new Volvo...
Thanks for any advice,
Chris

Re: I've lost the new car feeling - chipped, then cracked windshield (sierraV50)

Sorry to hear this. Almost nothing makes a car feel older, no matter how old it already is, than windshield cracks. At least you can't see a door ding or curb rash when you're inside the car. I had a similar experience with my prior car: took a rock on the freeway, and within 10 minutes the chip had expanded to a 12-inch long crack. There are any number of factors that can cause this that don't have anything to do with the glass itself. There have been a few threads over time complaining about the perceived "softness" of the Volvo glass, however. One such thread is here. Unfortunately, I suspect you are on your own as far as getting the windshield replaced. I believe your service adviser would have to be feeling extremely charitable to replace it under warranty (it's not Volvo's fault that a rock hit your windshield, after all), and I doubt you'll be able to demonstrate that your windshield was defective in some way. As far as insurance is concerned, unless you have a glass replacement rider on your policy, it probably won't help you. A new windshield should go for about $200 installed and that will likely be less than your deductible. Sorry for the bad news.

Re: I've lost the new car feeling - chipped, then cracked windshield (sierraV50)

I got a chip with 3000 miles on the ODO. Ended up into a 2 foot crack! This was after it was fixed using a windshield repair service. It's a hit or miss. Mine came from a bolt that a truck threw up.
The crack grew a few inches more after I took that pic.
If you can fix it (windshield repair places), do it. Not even worth troubling the dealer or insurance for it, pay the 60 bucks and enjoy the car.

The crack propagated even after that, if I'm reading you right.
Regardless, mine nearly spans the windshield now - all down low in the dark/opaque tinted section, but above where the wiper blades sit.
Seems like mullman's $200 figure is more what I'm looking at.
-Chris

When I had my S40, that was one of my biggest complaints, because the glass was VERY poor quality. I had rock chips in the glass at 1,000 miles and I had never even driven on an interstate or followed close to anybody. To top it all off, after washing my car one day, I realized that the wipers had actually scratched the windshield and put lines from one side to the other. I was so tempted to take a hammer to the glass just to get it replaced, and Volvo's answer to me when I brought it to their attention was that it was "normal wear and tear". I have never owned a vehicle with such poor quality glass, and it makes you wonder how safe it is because what if the rock had been just a little bigger?

Same here. I dont think I had hit 3000mi yet and blam! I got a chip just like the author of this thread but a little higher on the window.
Got it repaired as it wasn't cracked or anything of that nature.
But since then, I've tacked on another 22,000mi and my windshield is beat all to hell.
Never in my life have I had a car that had such a 'soft' window. Everytime I go to wash my window it P*sses me off that I have 25 or 30 dings all over it.

Keeping original warranty is top on my list, of course. I want it done right - "as new" for all intents and purposes.
Curious in the case of your friend - the DEALER recommended the 3rd party, so wonder what that would impact if a warranty issue did arise from the 3rd party's work...
Regardless, I'll start w/ my dealer. Start by expressing displeasure and go from there. I'll ask him about other-than-OEM options; ask him if the svc. dept. has seen an inordinate number of windshield chips/crack, etc.
Thanks,
Chris

All else being equal, sure, I'd also have the dealer do it (and definitely get them to quote the work, just to see), but that route is likely to be the most expensive and least convenient. Do a little homework to find a reputable auto glass place in your area and give them a call. It'll almost certainly be a lot cheaper, and they very likely will come to your car instead of your car having to go to them.

Well it's just something to think about since we're still on the warranty and some dealers can be less than understanding. I agree, going to a reputable window shop is going to be quicker and cheaper. I know that some dealers don't even do window replacement so they just send you off to a local company that they know will do a good job.

I've had to have my windshield replaced. My crack was only about 8" long, but that is apparently too big for anyone to simply repair, so I got the whole thing replaced. It cost about $340 total, done through Safelite. The glass they used wasn't branded "Volvo", but it was absolutely identical to the stock windshield and the build location is the same as stock... so it's likely they were made on the same assembly line. However, if you call a Volvo dealer, you'll pay nearly $100 more to get the Volvo branded windshield.
The best thing about Safelite is that they send a serviceman to you... either at work or home. No need to drop your car off anywhere. I highly recommend them.

That sucks. I literally chipped my windshield 12miles away from my dealer after JUST driving it off the lot.. Next moring I woke up to a 2' crack!

Re: (dirtyrascal7)

My windshield was cracked up near Auburn, CA over the Memorial weekend. I was passing a rock truck around 11:30 pm when a *pile* of rocks fell off the truck. The rocks scattered all over the road and one, a golf ball sized one, bounced off the road in front of us and smacked the windshield near where the rearview mirror is mounted. My windshield cracked upon impact all the way across the the edge of the driver's side and half way to the edge of the passenger side.
I pulled up along side the truck and had my wife write down all the markings on the truck door and the license plate number. Then I pulled off at the next exit and filled up the gas tank while keeping the receipt to prove that we where up there.
When we got home from our holiday I looked up the truck company, Valley Aggregate Transport Inc. out of Yuba City, and called them up. They actually have an automated option for windshield claims. I left three voice mails and never got a call back. I then called them back and punched in the number for human resources. Once on the phone with a live person I told my story and was tranfered to the claims guy. He sent me some forms to fill out and now we are waiting to hear back from them.
Volvo of Santa Cruz quoated me $425 for the replacment windshield and installation. They told me that a local glass shop would do the work because they don't have the equipment. They also said that due to the design of these windshields and the silicone seal that is used, the car *must* sit for 24 hours to cure properly. Otherwise there could be leakage.
BTW my insurance deductible is $100 so I'd opt for a "Volvo" windshield if I had to make a claim. Also keep in mind that by LAW insurance companies have to pay for OEM replacement parts until the car is 2 years old. So if you want OEM thats what you will get regardless of what the insurance company wants. I'm not sure how this law affects those who don't want OEM parts.

It looked you only had a chip in your pic. Yes, for me, even after it was fixed, it became a crack. It's a hit or miss, depending on where the chip is. The windshield takes a lot of stress from the car.
Just to let you know, I plan on going use an aftermarket glass as Volvo's charge for a OEM windshield is absolutely crazy. As far as warranty is concerned, the volvo dealership will send it out to a repair guy anyways so I'm eliminating the middle man (dealership). I'm not sure if Volvo warranties non-OEM glass.
