No doubt, one of the strangest noises since the throw out bearing on my 64 Chevelle SS. On the highway yesterday and the screech- howl- sounds from car hell return. I was waiting for the turbo to come blasting through the hood, but I was just cruising at 65 when it started and stayed for about 30 seconds. But then I noticed the yellow warning light and magic wrench came on the next time I started the car, and it only has 6500 miles. So my hope is this mystery bearing about to lock up and probably catch on fire somewhere has left some sort of message for the tec's to read. Or they can't find it, since it does it once a week at random times and speed from 40 to 70mph. and the beast does start on fire and I'd be done with the nonsense this car has displayed so far in 7 months. I'm amazed at $45K the defects and small annoying crap this car has had. 09-S80-T6-. I like the ride, finish and style but the other problems can get fairly annoying at times.

You might have a lemon. Or a lime. Tangerine maybe? I'm thinking grapefruit - slight sour taste, but excellent color and good overall flavor.

Did any message come on the display along with the wrench? Did it sound like it was coming from a wheel or the engine bay? Does it only happen at high speeds (does it go away when you slow down?) And how come you didn't pull over when something like that happens?!?!

I have simpler and less dramatic explanations:
1. The yellow triangle and wrench - car tells you that it is time for the first maintenance. Modern cars have condition monitoring driven schedule - by the hours of motor running, and not the mileage. So, if you drive slower than some average speed, used in the 7500 miles interval calculation, you will get the warning earlier. 6500 miles seems to be typical number to get the warning. I've got one at 6750 miles, and did not pay attention to it for another 1K.
2. Many roads in US have such surface treatment that produce howling-screeching sound, especially - along the shoulders, to wake the unattentive drivers up. Next time, when you hear this sound observe the road surface and either slow down or speed up to see, if the tone and the loudness change with the speed. Then - it is the road surface - for sure.
If it would be a bearing - it would be more continues and would become more and more prominent over the time.

Gascos - Very good explanation - I think you might have something here. Maybe the warning indicator was just a service reminder, and the howling sound could have been because of the rippled roadside or possibly a very loud road in a construction area.

You guys are kidding me right? I've logged lots of miles over many years and if someone doesn't know the difference between grooved roads and bad bearings they better not get in the car and drive. I believe its under the hood and not a blender door situation. As far as pulling over, it was impossible because there was no safe shoulder area I was near, and it didn't seem worth getting hit, trying to diagnose this nonsense. Nice ride, nice looks, but as the man said, you can put a blond wig on an ugly woman and she's still ugly. This car seems pretty ugly so far. And the wig ain't helping.

You guys have been watching too many Honda commercials with the musical roads. But if you notice when the Honda stops its not screaming like my Volvo does while going 30MPH on a newly paved road. Only lasted 10 seconds and its semi-rural so no quick place to pull over, except into a tree, which might correct the problem

All that you say is dead on. However, if your problem was a bearing, it would not have simply stopped after 10 seconds. It sounds like you have had a lot of problems with your S80. Strange howling noises are disconcerting to say the very least. I hope you can narrow it down and share with us what you find.

Saturdays howl was 30+ seconds so its getting worse. Diagnosed as Cage Bearing/Seal in the AWD. Now we try and get them to hear it-I'm going to record on my phone next time so we can document it. In the meantime my 2 week road trip to who knows where? is on hold till mid July so they figure it out. I told the tech I'm not up for sitting on the side of a road in the mid-west if the seal fails and the bearing follows suit and he agreed. It will vibrate the car to death, a slow painful noisy death, then I'll have a car full of rattles on top of the rest of the stuff. I love Volvos, usually medium rare.

99% sure-I'm dropping the car and let the tech take it home to get an ear full. But from my explanation and explaining to them it was a "bearing" sound and when it happened they put their finger on it right away. A lot of circumstances need to fit, mileage, drive train temp, etc. The challenge is to have it do it for the tech so he can verify. They said it would get more frequent which is fine, and then easy to duplicate. In the meantime I just don't want to get stuck on a day trip before we get it resolved.
