Howdy...
So I've got about 3K happy driving miles on my 06 V70R. Overall, very very pleased.
I've got a thing going on that I'd like some advice on. I can't tell if this is the dreaded "axle ping" of which I've read a lot about, or something different. I've tried doing a search on my issue, but it's hard to do a search on such esoteric terms as "clunk" or "noise". Forgive my ignorance if this has already been discussed, or if this is actually the "axle ping" problem manifest in a different manner.
About one out of every 8 or so starts, as I'm turning the key in the ignition, and the engine is turning over, I hear a metallic "clonk" sound from somewhere (I think) towards the rear of the vehicle. I always start the car with the clutch pedal down and (usually) in first gear, as I almost habitually put the car in first when parking it. This "clonk" only occurs while starting is happening, and is not shifting- or driving-related.
Anyone have any insight? I look forward to your informative responses!!
mds

Moneypenny,
It's definitely not the axle ping issue; that presents itself as a clicking or pinging noise from the front axle when you are actually in motion, when the axle itself comes under load from either accelerating or decelerating (i.e. lift off throttle), and primarily noticable at lower speeds.
Unfortunately I do not know what the noise might actually be, but there are many here much better versed in these issues than I, and I'm certain they will have answers for you!
Good Luck
gb

Re: Is this the "axle ping" or something else? (Moneypenny)

Sounds like the parking brake "breaking free" from the rust of the rear disk. Happens all the time w/me when left overnight in moist weather and/or moist nights over a few days of non-driving. Could this be it? If so, don't worry about it - most folks on this board have experienced it and it does not cause issues.
Is the car in slight motion, even though you're not technically driving, to create this sound, or are you remaining in 100% stop?

I'd say it's something in the RWD part of the Haldex unit.
I have an MDX that does the same thing, but have not experianced it on my R.

I haven't experienced this, but as you have an '06, then you have the pre-charged haldex programming to pre-load the rear axle with some torque. Maybe you are having an issue with this?

MoneyPenny,
I noticed that in mine a few times, but only in the first month of ownership and since then (April-May) it seems to have gone away and I can't really recall the last time I actually heard it.
It mit be a coinciedence but I think whenever it would happen I also noticed the main engine cooling fan would be on full blast for 10-20 seconds at the initial start time and then slow down or shut off.
I'll keep an ear open for it and report back if I hear it again.
On a likely UNrelated note, try this: In your '06 turn your key to position II and watch the CEL (check engine light), after about 20 seconds mine starts to blink, and blinks exactly 7 times and then stops. Does it every time. Might be a software glitch in '06 or could indicate a problem in one of the modules (CEL, etc.) Also, if I auto-up my windows and then turn off the engine the windows change direction and head back down, what a pain in the @SS It think both of these things and the click at start time are common in MY06.
LTA
Is it possible that it is coming from the engine bay and not the rear of the car? Your description sounds like perhaps a broken tooth on the flywheel ring gear, but that is up front.
