Forgive the dumb question as I am new to the AWD game but should there be an access panel of some sort here? This is on a 2002 V70 XC (not Haldex) It also seems to be weeping fluid...any comments on that?

Yep, thats normal.

I've seen them weep or leak way worse than that. It's probably the differential seal but could be the viscous coupler itself (the part you see through the hole)

Thank you. I thought the viscous coupler was closer to the front? No?

Nope, the transmission connects to the angle gear (also referred to as bevel gear). Then that goes to the propeller shaft to the viscous clutch to the final drive.

Can viscous coupling be replaced on its own or does one replace entire prop shaft?

It can be replaced on it's own.
Thanks, getting some springy knocking from rear down low when I reverse out of drive. Thought it was the handbrake acting up but now I’m worried it’s the VC. Gonna pull the HB mech out to see if sound goes away.

I am working on this on the same vehicle (2002 V70 X/C) right now. Just replaced the pinion seal on the differential (right behind the viscous coupling). Fairly easy job; just watch how far you press in the seal, if you are not using the correct Volvo tool. I pressed mine in too far and had to remove it and re-install it (got away with removing it with no damage!).
