Yes, there was such a thing as the 96'-97' 850 GLT AWD Wagon, but it was never officially offered in the US market. It had higher ground clearance and came standard with 'Perus' wheels. I think that I might have a brochure of that car somewhere, I will have to check and see.

Hi,

thanks for your reply.
I am located in Canada, so perhaps this is why I've been able to find one. I'm looking for a used AWD wagon and needless to say my choices are limited.

1. 91-95 Audi 100/A6 quattro
pros: cool car, great interior, proven AWD
cons: hard to find, questionable reliability

2. 91-92 Mercedes 300TE 4Matic
pros: great build quality
cons: crappy AWD, expensive to buy & service

3. 92-94 Subaru Legacy Turbo
pro: fun to drive
cons: extremely expensive and hard to find parts

4. 95-98 Subaru Legacy Brighton
pros: reliable engine, proven AWD system, cheap
cons: anemic, rough engine, expensive parts, poor crashworthiness

5. 96-97 Volvo 850 GLT AWD
pros: fun, comfortable & luxurious, ?
cons: expensive, how is the part time AWD?, ?

Can you please give me more insight into this. Is this Volvo a good idea? I would go for it if I knew it was as reliable (or close to) as a Subaru

Initially I was set on a Scooby Legacy, however the prospects of expensive maintenance on a utilitarian car made me look at perhaps something more enjoyable to drive.

By the way this 850 that I'm considering has 90,000 KM (56,000 miles), manual, leather, sunroof. They're asking $23,500 CDN (about US$15,000). What do you think?

The car does not contain the GLT designation. What it shares with the GLT is the 190 hp lpt engine. I own such a car, and know of about a dozen others in Canada.

To see a copy of the brochure, go to OZbrick http://www.geocities.com/ozbrick850/brochures.html

No such thing as a 1996 850 awd. There were units built in 1996, but sold as MY1997. Mine was built in mid 1996.

Gus

email me if you want more information.
In summary, the asking price is reasonable, but with qualifications. Is it a dealer? Is there any warranty? What region of Canada? Resale prices appear to be higher on the west coast than in Ontario for example. Has it been maintained? Service history? The timing belt need to be changed almost immediately. Get that done as part of the deal.

Good luck with your decision. Let me know if you buy it. There is a disucssion group of manual transmission Volvo awd owners that you might want to join.

I know of one here in Ottawa for sale, a blue AWD wagon with a stick. If you want info I can get it for you.
Thanks for all your replies guys

1FASTBOX - yes i'd be interested in details about that car.

One last question: what was the retail price on this vehicle back in '97?
