I ordered the D2R plug 55w kit from SharpHID and was wondering if this was the right plug? It has a + on one end and - on the other side.

The stock plug that goes into the original ballast has 4 female ends but only 2 wires. Can I get away with splicing the wires and kind ghetto rigging the entire unit or is the just the complete wrong plug?

Thanks in advance!
-Colin

WHOA
Your replacing your factory Ballast, and bulb with the 55w unit?
I think the factory ballast has quite a bit more going on in relation to the factory electronics that your thinking. Things like the "headlight out" message etc...
But if i'm wrong, and its a simple 12v ballast that you can replace..... with a 55w unit. I'll buy you a beer.
A good way to test is to plug in the original ballast while loose, and test with a volt meter thoes 2 wires, ground your Negative wire on your Volt meter, and probe each of the two. If one is +12v while lights are on... and the other one tests as a ground.
It should be good to go.

You can replace the factory 35w HID bulbs with pretty much any cheap/crappy/expensive/marked up 35w HID bulb out there, D2R or D2S ...they'll be compatible.

The orignal poster is talking about upgrading the factory system Bulb & ballast to a 55w unit.

so the factory is 35w. What's the advantage of the 55w?

Re: is the the right light?? (JoeLvo)

The factory ballast is a simple 12V setup. It's a two-piece design with the igniter fitting onto the back of the bulb (similar to a D1x bulb, just that it separates). The 'bulb out' message comes from a wire that is spliced to the "+" feed and I believe checks to see if there is a current draw. I don't know if it regulates just how much of a draw there is, but I think it should work... Good luck
*edit* to check for polarity, just take the 'main' plug off the back of the headlamp and check to see which one ground is (the plus w/ the most wires run to it) and then trace that back to the plug in question. I'd tell you myself, but someone has my spare 'internal' harness and my donor lamps are not with me now. You might also want to 'beef up' the wiring, as all of the wires inside the headlamps are highly inadequate.

I cannot wait to see your car when it's all done, looking forward to the GTGs later this summer.

The connector you have pictured there the standard ballast connector - it isn't specific to bulb type. Unfortunately care manufacturers have not figured out a standard connector for the German HID kits so you will likely need to make one. The one pictured is 9006 and you can pick up the male version from any decent parts store to make the adapter cable. Some OEM kits use a 9006 connector but I'm not sure if this is the case with the Volvos.
The 55w kit should work just fine as your car is already programmed for HIDs. It will not likely detect an issue even with the increased power draw.
Email me with any other questions as I'm not on Swedespeed too often right now. You can find contact details at http://www.sharphid.com.
Regards,
John
