I am pretty sure I need a new SUM, but I would like to know if it is possible to mate a used SUM to my car, or do I need to bend over and let Volvo have at it? I know I do need to have the new (hopefully used) SUM programmed for my car.

Re: Is the SUM (suspension module) VIN locked? (SHIFT_S60R)

It is possible. Your car being an '04, you must get an '04 or it will not be compatible. The '05 and up ones are different.

Not vin locked but will need to be calibrated at the dealer.
Get used, been there, done it.
As far as I know the only computer module that has to be purchased brand new is the srs module. They will NOT flash a used one.

Much appreciated guys. I just wanted to verify. My indy and Volvo (of course) is saying it is VIN locked. The search for a cheap used one(cause I found a non cheap used one for $415.00 ; new part with superseding part number is $471.00) continues....

Yeah I had no problem when I took it to my local dealer and told them i'd put in a used one. They did their thing and it's been working fine since.
