I'm about to order my first Volvo (Ash Gold, T5) it has just about everything on it, except I'm not sure whether to get the RTI system or not? How is everyones (that has it) experiences with it? Problems? Good Points? Also does the 10 disk CD player come with it or do I need to order it with the Nav system? Thanks

For $1,895 I think it is a great deal and a great...toy!
It is much better than the previous CD-ROM based system, it adjusts instantly if you deviate from the planned course, has better graphics, wider screen, it is quicker, has much more info in its database, bigger scale (from 0.1 mile to 60 miles!) and you only need one DVD for US and Canada.
The only car that the RTI can be combined with a 10-disc CD changer is the S80. In all other models you will have to choose either or.
Yannis

How good is the dvd? Have you traveled with it? My uncle just got the Alpine DvD system put in his Yukon XL, and asheville is barely on the map! All it has is three major highways in this area. It doesn't even have the Biltmore Estate! I was kinda unimpressed with that. I don't know if its just their lack of getting everything from the cd to the dvd, or if the dvd is actaully full. How have you found your coverage?

The DVD from Navtech is tremendous!
Yannis

If you didn't know this already, I just wanted to mention that the new DVD based system now comes with a remote control (previously optional on CD based system), so that every passenger in your car can have access to the Nav system while someone is driving. Pretty neat huh?
Also, check out this website below:
Volvo Navigation System Information
-Drew
[This message has been edited by InDy (edited 03-09-2002).]

I am new, and I am saving for an S60.
This is probably a dumb question, but is the DVD Nav system compatible with playing regular DVD's? OR, is it possible to modify the screen to watch a regular DVD? (any extra A/V inputs etc)
Not a huge concern to me, I just like to know since the dash integrated screen looks better asthetically to me rather than replacing a headunit with an aftermarket.
Thanks in advance!

In Europe you can get the DVD Navigation System with Road Traffic Information (RTI) and a TV tuner, but you still can't play DVD movies on it as far as I know.
There is a website called NAV-TVthat sells conversion kits for Acura, BMW, Infiniti, Lexus, and Mercedes, but I don't think that they have anything for Volvo yet. I guess you could always ask.

-Drew

Definitely potential for being more distracting than even a cell-phone. Doesn't the S80 Exec have the DVD screen in the back seat so they can enjoy the movies?
Last year, when I was in SanFrancisco I rented a Lincoln with a navigation system.
The maps had all the streets, and a lot of detail.
However I was disappointed in that the unit would sometimes get confused. In city streets it would sometimes 'jump' over a street. Needless to say this causes all kinds of confusion when the software is trying to take you to a destination.
I also had the same problem in the hills on the California cost.
I see it as a problem with the satellite reception, not the unit.
