Is the flame trap the PCV valve?

I put "flame trap replacement, 240 volvo" into google, but no definitive hits. Nothing that has me running out to the car tonight.

I've got the parts, and want to get them in, but the Haynes is borrowed at the moment.

A buddy in the foreign car repair business had some neat advice. Put in the new trap, and hold off on replacing the oil pan gasket. The leak might have been from the trap, the gasket might not leak after the trap replacement ... He [John Gallagherm Havertown] suggested waiting 1000 miles or a month.

Yes, the flame trap is basically the pcv valve. Just pop the hose off and replace it. Check to see how much gunk is in the plastic housing and clean it out while you are in there. Also check the hoses for cracks or splits.

On a 93 it should be fairly easy to get to, as 240 flame traps go.

IPD talked me into the housing, also. $36 for that, and $2 for the trap itself.

Assuming it is original, do most people replace the housing [14 years, 110K miles; maybe it can develop a crack or leak?]

Do I do this from jackstands?

I doubt your housing is bad. I've only seen one cracked one, but I normally deal with the turbo cars which do not have a flame trap, just an empty housing.

No need to put the car up on stands, it is easiest to get to from the top. I think on a 93 it is actually sitting slightly above the intake manifold, between the #3 & #4 intake runners. If it is below the intake then it takes quite a bit longer to get the job done, but it is still easier to work from above.

Great! I was checking it out by flashlight; I'll try again tomorrow, but a little earlier.

I wanted to ask about turbos, also, but wrong forum. Anyway, is there a flame trap on a '94 850 Turbo?

This picture might help. The flame trap is located there, inbetween cyl 3 and 4. See the white elbow connecting to the large hose running across the valve cover? Thats where it is.
sidenote: I got rid of the trap on my recent turbo conversion on my 240, that's why its just an elbow.
