Easy....easy....didn't mean to insult you.
But the unit was designed a looooong time ago by radar detector standards. And I highly doubt the software upgrade is a "partial exchange for a newer unit" unless they are rebuilding the internals of it along with the software update. |
I was not insulted at all, don't read into words on the internet.
I have not "kept up with the times" that well on detector technology since I bought my V1 10 years ago, and wanted to see what I was missing out on. Last I heard POP was the rage.
You (and others) have incorrectly termed the V1 upgrade as a "software upgrade". It is not a software upgrade, it is an upgrade as I mentioned above. Essentially you get a re-built unit. It's not really a partial exchange on a newer unit, I shouldn't have classified it as that, as I think the chassis you get back is the same (the serial number stays the same IIRC) but it is a real upgrade including any hardware if needed.

We'll Upgrade Your Earlier Model:
Since 1994, whenever we've made a performance breakthrough, we've offered it to our past customers in the form of an upgrade. The price varies, depending on the parts required. Included is a one-year warranty, same as new. |
My friend did this to his. His old unit did not have Laser and he got it upgraded to one that did. That included a whole new slew of parts...receivers, etc, including a new external top case (for the rear antenna, I think that's why I thought it was a partial exchange).
This can be almost as expensive as buying a new one, depending on how old your unit is. And in some cases, it's probably more expensive than buying a new competitor's unit. But I'll never own a detector without the arrows and counters again. For me, even if it's the same or even not as great as some other unit's coverage (although I believe it still is), that feature alone sells it for me.
