OK, you all know I'm not technically minded. So go easy. I met up with a fellow SS member (johanh) today and I was looking at his engine. He has an 05 V70R and I have an 06 S60R. I don't know what it's called, but it's the large metal pipe that goes over the right of the engine. His had two metal brackets holding that pipe and mine didn't. Mine is connected to the engine block with a small connection and I looked in the back and there were two empty holes where screws would go to hold that bracket. I'm hoping it's just a design change for 06, but I've seen pics of S60Rs here and they have that bracket...although I don't remember what year those were. I can post pics tomorrow. Hope I'm not missing something.

The 04/05 intake is metal while the 06 intake is plastic. This is why you have the different mountings and supports.

Do you know why they changed? I would think metal would be better. I did check and mine is plastic...just coated to look like metal. So what is the name of that pipe...air intake?

It's a turbo to intercooler pipe.. turbo pipe, hot air pipe...
Whatever. .

we actually discovered this too at our g2g last week.
We compared my intake plumbing ('06) to MagoonR's ('04) and we see how Volvo (Ford) cut some cost going to plastic charge-pipe
The two clips that hold it actually appeared to have melted (maybe not) and come off-center.

A few manufactures are moving to plastic. My 05 Pt cruiser GT convertible also has a plastic intake.

Not all - My V50 T5 has a metal pipe. But it goes under the engine, not over.
BTW, plastic is not all bad. It has lower thermal transfer properties, and it allows for more flexiblity ergo potentially fewer connections.
Tom.

Ya know...why can't Volvo just stick with one design and get it over with?
Thanks for setting me on the right path!
Cheers,
Prospero

It's thermal capacity and thermal transfer are going to be much lower than the aluminum, another good thing. The metal pipe gets hot and STAYS hot, for hours after the engine is shut down. It's a big chunk of hot metal under the hood, and I can't think of a normal situation where that would be a benefit. The plastic pipe will hold much less heat and should cool off much faster.
I agree that the metal one wins the superficial quality test, though.

Re: Is my engine missing some parts? (mgotts)

I think this was more or less a result of the new 2.4 T5 introduction. The T5 uses the simpler version of the same KKK-K24 so instead of stocking 2 different types of turbo's Volvo can order one and the same now.
Maybe the plastic pipe was an attempt to fight heatsoak but still the quality appears flimsy..
