well,...I have a 2012 t5, purchased used from volvo in 2015, 28,000 .It was still under volvo warranty so I let them do the oil changes....I wasn't aware of any issues, like I know now..
It is using oil now, 72,000 miles. But it's only around 1qt/2000...so I'm lucky.....
currently trying the "BG" regiment...
I think that tsb does cover the 2012, t5 engine....but regardless, my 2012 is using oil....

It is a great car though...

Depends if the price is adjusted for the cost of repair.

Thanks for your input. No engine should use a quart every 2k miles at 72k that sucks. I think I'm going to pass on it.

Tough call. In 2018, I bought a 2012 XC60, 70K miles, 5 cylinder with a burnt valve. Replaced the valves and drove the car. All of the piston tops were coked with burnt oil. It used 1qt every 1000 miles. I sold the XC60 to a used car lot. Get a Carfax report.

The control ring issue was a flaw mostly due to the 10k interval, right? At that low mileage they shouldn’t be that gummed up, and you could maybe run some flushes and short interval changes and keep a 5-7k interval thereafter and never have the oil consumption, right? Especially over that few miles, the oil was (hopefully) changed on a time based interval so sludge never even started to accumulate.

My fear would be the opposite unfortunately - an 11 year-old car that was rarely driven, maybe not serviced frequently. To me the concern of gummed up rings may be more pronounced because the car was used so sparingly, probably an older person's car.

IMO, 28K on a 2012 T5, I would take the car if it appears to be well taken care, shiny paint and of course the price is right. If you can do the normal stage one maintenance, change all the fluids, filters, spark plugs, and do good through inspection of all hoses/plumbing, tires, brakes etc. It should be a solid car.
