On my way home lastnight, I opened the R up (Seems to happen a lot these days), in first running on 95 octane in sport mode with outside temp of 10 degrees and just after some nice rain she sure winds those revs up quickly, in first, once again I was the weakest link and found the rev limiter . Second I shifted at around 6700rpm. Quick burst in 3rd and then had to get onto the brakes. When I geared her down into second she let out one hell of bang from the exhaust. Is this normal? Occasionaly I get this bang when shifting up when I really get onto the accelarator and boost. Have I possibly damaged something? Only single bangs, and obviously only when you push her.

Re: Is it normal for the R to backfire/bang out of th exhaust? (CyberRacer)

Oh yes, on the down change the revs only went up to round 5000rpm so no over rev on the downchange.

The "pop" is normal but varies from car to car, driver to driver, etc.
Run a search on "pop" in this forum (and archive) and you'll find posts dating back several years on the topic.

thanks, actually sounds quite cool sometimes, other times bit embarrassing.

Your car is simply asking you to install an anti-lag system. You should do as your car asks; then you can BBQ all of the M3s that won't give up...
http://video.google.com/videop...ystem

If you do the JRL mod to your exhaust it will pop more frequently.
I've had heard some "pops" that have almost been too loud to classify as "pops". They sound more like "booms"...or back fires. I gave the throttle a jab the other day (sitting, bored in traffic) and the resulting "pop" scared the hell of out the guy next to me. Ooops.
-Eric
