My heart is hurting at all the automotive souls being lost to this bogus cash for clunkers program. Are we going to lose a lot of 240s or does it not qualify as a gas hog? Any thoughts?
I've been looking for a nice 240 but I hear that the car's engine needs to be seized in order to qualify for the payout. This could be tragic in sourcing good older cars. I've already read a lot of Saab 900 turbos are going to waste.

What year 240 are you looking at?
Do you plan to cash it in on the clunkers program?
George Dill

Re: Is a 240 a "clunker" ? (gdill2)

The body on my '88 automatic is a bit rough, but it's mechanically sound, so I wouldn't call it a clunker, and on a recent highway trip with the '89 5-speed I got 8.1 L/100 km (about 35 mpg (C) or 31.5 MPG (US)), and that was cruising at about 125 km/hr., so that's no clunker either. I think that most RWD Volvos have a special type of owner who keeps the car in good shape, and when it's used up either keeps it for parts, sells it as a parts car, or strips the usable parts and then sells it for scrap. There may be a few which go into the clunker program, but I think there'll still be a supply of good used ones, especially in the US with it's larger market.

I'm looking at '83-'93 models.
I would never cash one in for that BS program. It's killing a soul for monetary gain.
Melodrama aside, I hope it is true that Volvo 240 owners would value what they have.

I don't know of any 240 that qualifies as a clunker. My '86 wagon automatic is rated 19mpg. Others ('86+) I see are rated 20mpg or higher. Clunkers are 18mpg or lower and newer than 25 years.
Some oddities in the clunker program. A 2008 Lambourghini worth $160,000 qualifies as a clunker.
There are some cars over $60 grand I could be interested in if I could afford 'em. But then, I would also like a better tow vehicle and enclosed trailer, maybe an EFI peripheral port 13B for the RX7 ... and a spare ... , and a nice six speed close ratio racing tranny, and some up-grades to my shop. And oh yeah, a full restoration for the '89 240 along with some hot bits for it for my "Sunday go to meeting" car. Hmm, now where did the money for that $60 + grand car go to?

If you go on this website, http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm, it will tell you what the combined fuel economy for your 240 is. The combine fuel economy must be 18 mpg or worse, which I don't think the 240 is.

Re: (fcpgroton)

You bet it's wrong! A couple of months ago , that identical car was up for sale on ebay for an awfully good price. The seller was on the West Side of L.A., and since that Volvo had California plates, I could bet (Hey... this is Las Vegas, after all) that it's the same car. That video really pisses me off... I mean REALLY!!! Some not-so-affluent family could have used that car, I'm sure. That video is going to put me in a crappy mood for the rest of the day.

clunker?!

Ha! no way would I trade my beloved '85 240 (even if it did qualify).
I can't think of another car with a 1200lb load capacity that's so easy to fix, doesn't burn any oil, and is pretty clean with regards to emmissions.
not to mention the factory tape deck!
how many years would I get out of an econobox anyway?

Re: (fcpgroton)

I'd be FAR more concerned about the fact that tons of excellent 240s are dying every day in Hollywood. You've seen them, as the "crash-into" vehicles that line the streets during car chases.
Or maybe as the vehicle driven--then wrecked--by the old couple, suburban mom, college professor or reckless teen.
Shameful, shameful.
[We should start a charity...]
AWD

Re: Is a 240 a "clunker" ? (ACD)

So according to the official pdf of cars traded in for cash-for-clunkers, the 240 did apparently slip through the cracks, though pretty nominally:
240
1993 - 1
240 Wagon
1990 - 1
240 DL/GL
1987 - 1
1988 - 1
240 DL/GL Wagon
1989 - 56
240 DL/GL/Turbo
1985 - 3
240 DL/GL/Turbo Wagon
1984 - 2
1985 - 3
So a quick add up and we've lost 68 240s from the ranks. A surprising number from the ’89 model year.
Here's the link for anyone interested:
http://www.cars.gov/files/offi...s.pdf

I am surprised to see that. How did they slip through the cracks?
And then that makes me wonder if the dealers will ever see their $4500. for cars that really were not part of the program?
